Subject: 1970's horror movie question

Written By: stefchu on 01/22/04 at 01:11 p.m.

Okay,my friends, this has been bothering me for years. What horror film from the 1970's has a real scary scene that shows a dog running around with a human head mask on top of its head? I know this scene is in the movie "Terror in the Aisles" which is basically a collection of the scariest scenes from classic horror films. I think it is either the 1978 remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" or "The Mephisto Waltz" a move about a satanic cult starring Alan Alda of MASH fame, and Curt Jergens.  I have a movie reference book that shows a still from the "Mephisto Waltz". The still shows the actress from this movie standing next to the dog wearing the human head mask. But I have read articles online that the 78 "Body Snatchers" has a scene that features a dog wearing a human head mask as well. I don't have copies of either film, and the video stores in my area do not,as well. Can anybody shed some light on this movie mystery? ??? Thanks! Sincerely,Steve.

I just happened to be up late one night a few weeks ago, and I got to watch "The Mephisto Waltz"...there is a scene in the movie where a dog is wearing a human mask.  It's very creepy.

As far as the other movie, I have not seen it in a long time, so I can not say for sure if there is a similar scene or not.

Yeah there is a similar scene in Invasion of the Body Snatchers, but it's not a mask. They show it running by briefly as Sutheland and the gal are trying to walk thru the streets pretending they've been taken.. They never explained it but I always figured somehow the pod latched onto the dog and the guy at the same time and somehow created a hybrid.

Thanks Curtis. I think you are right about the hybrid in the '78 "Body Snatchers". Now I know that I am not nuts. There are similar scenes in both films. Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

Oh...I forgot to mention. Someone once told me that in the Jack Finney novel "The Body Snatchers",the book that all the movie versions was based on, had animals and inanimate objects taken over by the "pod people". This included dogs, and mechanical objects such as tools and vehicles. I never read the novel, but maybe there was a dog/human hybrid in the book as well?  ??? Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

The remake of "invasion of the Body Snatchers" is the movie where the dog has the human head. Two pods (one human, one dog) accidentally merged in the film, creating this creature. This is also the seen they show in "Terror in the Aisles." "The Mephisto Waltz," another terrific film from the 70's has a similar scene, but it is a mask. Any other questions, I love this stuff?!

Thanks for your response, Peter. I will think of some more challenging horror movie trivia questions, and post them in the future. Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

In "Invasion of the Body Snatchers", there's a short scene of a guy sleeping next to his dog. A short time later, we see the dog again, with the man's head. It's a truly creepy scene.
