Subject: Where were you when Elvis Presley died?

Written By: Stevie B. on 02/04/04 at 07:02 p.m.

I was on vacation with my parents and sister. We are from Michigan, and went to Ohio that summer. We were in our Holiday Inn hotel when we turned on the tv, and found out that Elvis had passed away. Back then,I was not too familiar with Elvis, and even less familiar with his songs. We were going to Sea World the next day,and I had Shamu the Whale more on my mind than the King of Rock and Roll.   :-[ Where were you when you found out Elvis had died? Thanks for the memories! Sincerely,Steve.

Elvis was not played in our house.  I don't think I was really conscious of him until the day he died.  I was eight.  My mother had to explain to me how many millions of people loved him, and what his music did for rock 'n roll.
A few years later I started listening to a local oldies request show.  Back then, "oldies" rock 'n roll was strictly 1954-1964.  Without irony, I loved Elvis.  He was still called "Elvis Presley" back then, and he was not yet a universal icon.  People felt free to say he was just a greasy kid who ripped off black music and then turned into an obese Vegas wastoid.  Today those people like him, even if it's with a wink.  I didn't have that reference.  I loved his songs and his voice.  I didn't know him as a visual icon, either.  I was enamored with his music.

I was 9 and was at school when it was announced over the speakers by the headmaster.

He basically said something like "Now kids, something really sad has happened.  The famous singer Elvis Presley has just died.  Now some of your mummies are going to be really upset so if you want to go home and look after them that ok for you to leave now."

Now admittedly a lot of kids probably left regardless !!

I went home and mum and some neighbours were sitting round a table crying over coffee.  Mum was 28 and had loved him since she was a teen.

My friend Bee has a totally different memory.  She woke up on her birthday and her mum was too upset to say happy birthday to her.  So she had really bitter memories about it for a few years !!

42 W Union Blvd watching tv when my aunt called my mom to tell her. I was raised on Elvis. Couldn't get me away from even the cheesy of his  movies. I loved 'em all. I was shocked , to say the least. And then to have my other rock idol die 2 months later....whew. This topic inspires me to make a Fav Elvis movies topic in the....I guess "Before the 70's forum" .

I was on vacation, returning to Detroit from Toronto. I remember more about the trip than Elvis' passing as I was only 5. I've asked my mother about it and she remembers hearing the news on the radio when we were heading home. August 16 is also my mother's birthday.

I was also on vacation, we had gone to Washington D.C.that summer.  The day Elvis died we were on a day trip to Mt. Vernon, and we were on the boat ride.  I remember someone making an announcement over the boat's loudspeaker, telling the passangers that Elvis had died.  I remember women and some men sobbing, but I really didn't understand since  I wasn't too familiar with Elvis at that time.

I was sitting in the floor watching the Brady Bunch as I did everyday when I got home from school and my mom was in the kitchen starting supper when she started screaming and crying.  All I could think of at the time was please Lord, don't let them interrupt the Brady Bunch!!  We only had three channels ya know!
When I was two or three, we lived in an apartment complex across the street from Graceland and every sunday, Elvis and Vernon would open the gates and let the "average joe" in and they would ride their horses through and stop and talk to all the folks.  My mom still has a bunch of those pictures, including one of her handing me to him up on his horse.

I was 11 and my family had just returned home from a scuba-diving trip to Palau (in the Caroline Island group).  I had never been an Elvis fan but I was really shocked to hear that he'd passed away.

I was only 8 at the time, but I remember seeing women on the tv news crying in the streets. I remember the news saying that he died of a heart attack. His drug use was not revealed til much later.
