Subject: Least favorite 70's artists

Written By: eightiesfan on 03/08/04 at 10:24 a.m.

My least favorite band from the 70's would have to be Bread - with all due respect, I just find their songs too mushy for my taste (although I know others find them very romantic).

This is not an evaluation of artistic merit, just personal taste, mind you:

Elton John
Heart
Steve Miller Band
Van Morrisson
Kiss
Loggins & Messina
Kenny Loggins
Ted Nugent
Eddie Money
ELO
The Captain & Toenail
Neil Sedaka
Barry Manilow
Cher
America
Chicago

That's kind of how I feel about Bread too. David Gates was one the best songwriters of that decade - their music just isn't my personal taste.

Thanks for at least saying their songs were romantic. I'm sure it's not easy making a romantic song, at least one that sounds good, so I give Bread credit for that. I always liked
- Make It With You, Everything I Own, It Don't Matter to Me.
:)

MaxwellSmart:
Good list, but I don't think you're being fair ( :( ) to...

Elton John
- Your Song, Burn Down the Mission, Come Down In Time, Friends, Funeral For a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding, Someone Saved My Life Tonight. All '70's songs. That was his decade.
Steve Miller Band
- Jet Airliner, maybe that quirky Joker song?
Van Morrisson
- the '70s: I always like Domino, Linden Arden and Tupelo Honey.
Kenny Loggins
- okay, 1980 was his year: This is It, Keep the Fire.
Eddie Money
- okay, just one in the '70s and one in the '80s: Two Tickets, Runnin' Away.
ELO
- their best stuff wasn't played on the radio too much if at all: Mr. Blue Sky, So Fine, Livin' Thing, etc.
Neil Sedaka
- just one: Laughter in the Rain
Barry Manilow
- when Barry's good, he's good. when he's bad, he's god-awful: good in the '70s: Mandy, Could It Be Magic.
America
- sort of like barry. good in the '70s: Ventura Highway, Tin Man + Miniature Intro, Lonely People, Daisy Jane.
Chicago
- sort of like barry and america. good in the '70s: Questions 67 and 68, Feelin' Stronger Everyday, Call on Me, Old Days.

For the rest on the list...thank you!
;D

Yar, that's why I started with the caveat about personal taste, not artistic merit.  Personal taste isn't "fair," and I'm not out to chide others for THEIR personal tastes.
Objectively, Elton John & Bernie Taupin write great songs, but I mean, BLLLECCCCCHH!, I just don't like 'em!
:P
