Subject: 1974

I'm a big fan of books by Douglas Coupland. In his book Micorserfs he refers to 1974 as being the year that everything altered, breeding a generation of unmotivated slackers, and possibly was the year his brother, Jed, died as a child.

Can anyone think of what may have been significant enough about 1974 , that he would pick that year as the pivotal year for generation x? Sure Nixon resigned. But what year was the Apple computer invented in someones garage, was that 1974 also?

Just trying to think of pop culture references that are not TV, movie or music related. IT's HARD!

I agree with Chucky...it's hard. Whenever I reflect on years gone by I always think about what music was popular at the time and it helps me remember. I know "The Streak" was #1 that year and sparked a new trend. Also, Canadian singer Terry Jacks had a huge hit with his song "Season's In The Sun".

The first PC is generally refered to as the Altair, and it was announced in 1975. The first Apple was built around 1978 and sold around 1979. so it's not a PC milestone

1974 was near the end of the Vietnam war, troops had begun to be withdrawn by that point.. was he refering to the people born from 1974 onwards, or people who were young at the time, etc.

to be honest, I think he's full of it.. if he's refering to the typical Gen-X stereotype, he's really full of it
