Subject: Laughing gnomes...

This is a rhetorical question, I suppose, but still...does anyone know what on earth (or otherwise) persuaded David Bowie to record "The Laughing Gnome"? Because it's, um, not exactly the greatest record on earth. Don't get me wrong, I actually like it, but to say it departs from his usual style is a bit of an understatement! Just wondering if anyone knows what inspired it...?
