Subject: styx: behind the music

this is one of the "behind the music" episodes we been waitng for. they were the first and only band in history to have 4 consecutive triple albums in a row. have some the best classic rock songs in the 70's and early 80's. songs like "lady" "loreli", "renegade" "crystal ball", the grand illusion" "blue collar man" (lonely nights), and of course, their #1 classic "babe". no matter what you hear about dennis de young being outsted from the band and the tension in musical direction between dennis and tommy that tore styx apart in 1984,one thing that will stand against time is their music. hello!!! do i hear rock and roll hall of fame induction.

I was actually listening to them last night.. "Blue Collar Man" is one of my favs.. as much as I love them, the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame never inducts anyone good.. they're always some old farts that were popular with the "in" crowd of the days..

Hey Chuck I wouldn't call The Everly Brothers,Aretha Franklin,Elvis, Roy Orbison,Smokey Robinson, The Supremes, Rolling Stones, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Beach Boys, Fats Domino, The Who, The Four Seasons, Simon and Garfunkel, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Rod Stewart and Elton John etc etc..."in crowd" only groups, and if they are OLD FARTS then so are Styx - along with every other great 70s or 80s band you can name. By the way I love Styx music too.

Cheers

well, I should be a little less general, you can cite several examples of the elite critics favorites in addition to several groups that should be there.. but you will notice that aside from Rod Stewart, can you really honestly say any of them are from the 70s.. the Stones and the Who aside? the last two years or so have seen a couple of more from the early 70s.. considering it's a 25 year rule, there could easily be more 70s groups..

you'll notice the second largest selling group of the decade in terms of album sales, Chicago isn't on there.. considering they were never popular with the critics.. I'm not surprised.. nor is John Denver.. nor is Aerosmith.. I can easily go on...

I totally agree, although I was extremely happy to see the Bee Gees get in. The Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame is all made up of critics who ignore groups like Styx, Chicago, Journey etc. who deserve to get in just for the fact that these groups had talent and have some great songs that have stood the test of time. I can't believe with all the musical/lyrical genius of Steely Dan that they've been turned down on the last two ballots. It seems the older groups (late 50s/early 60s) that are getting inducted now are just one- and two-hit wonders with a negligible impact on rock history. You can't help wondering if it's just some group that some critic has fond memories of because a song served as the soundtrack to a makeout ritual. And speaking of making out and "night moves" - Bob Seger - he's a talent who's been going since the late 60s - has he even made the ballot yet????

By the way, I saw Styx in the mid-90s when they had DeYoung and Shaw - they were great.

there's another two right there that are extremely deserving of being inducted... Steely Dan and Bob Segar.. Night Moves is in my top ten for 70s albums.. as is Katy Lied by Steely Dan
