Subject: Badfinger: Behind The Music

Written By: james martin on 11/2/2000 at 9:23 a.m.

This Sunday, Vh1 will do a BTM on one of the most underrated and somewhat cursed bands of the 70's: Badfinger. They were the first and probably the only band to be signed to The Beatles' Apple label, they were called "The New Beatles" had 4 Top Ten singles in a row. "Come And Get It", "No Matter What", "Day After Day" (My favorite), and "Baby Blue". 2 of its members, singer/guitarist Pete Ham and bassist Tom Evans wrote probably one the greatest love songs of all time. The song was a #1 hit for Nisson in the spring of '72 and a #1 hit also for Mariah Carey in the winter of '94. I want to add Air Supply also recorded that song off their cd,"The Earth Is..." The song I'm talking about is "Without You". Soon afterwards, mismanagement, legal troubles followed. Apple Records went out of business in '75, then guitarist/vocalist Peter Ham committed suicide and it ended the group's career. Then, they tried to make a comeback in the early 80's but, the lawsuits, bad luck, and acrimony came back to haunt them and the 1983 suicide of bassist Tom Evans put an end to the group's career for good. I think this will be a good BTM a bit happy, sad, haunting and magical(the music). Don't Miss It!!! more underrated artists should be profile Need I say who? Put your comments on this BTM It will be interesting to see the results.
