I've heard the references to the Beverly Hills Hotel and to some Satanic references in the song, but never the Betty Ford Clinic!! First off, the Betty Ford Clinic was not even thought of when the song was written and secondly the only comparison you can make of the song and Betty Ford was the fact she was the First lady when the song was released and very well may have admitted her substance abuse problems around the time of the song's release. That in itself may have caused the silly and untrue rumor! Aj

yeah, the Betty Ford clinic angle is one I've never heard before either...

but didn't that song come out in 1977? Betty Ford's husband would have been out of the White House by then..

I can even remember the reference to the Satanic angle having something to do with the photo on the record when you opened it (one of those folded covers) something about how people we're standing around or something.. when I think back on it, I do remember the inner album cover being a little strange.. "they gather for the feast, they stab it with their steely knives, but they just can't kill THE BEAST "

Gerald Ford.. the funniest Republican VP until Dan Quayle burst on the scene... the men who help launch the career's of SNL comedians..

I couldnt remember if it came out in 1976 or 1977,
but it most likely was written in 1976, when Ford was still President, which lasted until mid-January 1977.

I had many teenagers at the time (as was I)
tell me of the Satanic messages in the lyrics and which person in the album picture was the leader of the Satanic cult the Eagles were in. Whoever spread the message about this, I must say it sure got around.

So true, also Bob Dole (Ford's running mate in 76' and the GOP candidate for Prez in 1996) was portrayed by Norm MacDonald on SNL and those were pretty funny too. Chevy Chase did a great Ford, though he looked nothing like him. Aj

Hotel California came out in 76.

I remember this too. There was a picture in the album (of the lobby I think) that had a few windows (not really windows but openings) at the top. There was a guy in one of the windows holding a skull. He was said to be Anton Szandor LaVey (He established the Church of Satan and wrote The Satanic Bible.)
