Subject: 70s-80s slasher movies

Written By: Adrienne Smith on 2/6/2001 at 5:38 p.m.

Hey! Kind of a 70s-80s question. Is there any record of a cheesy slasher movie from either the late 70s or 80s that goes by the name "My Funny Valentine" or "Happy Valentine's Day" or something of the sort? I remember seeing one way back in the day but can't find the name of it anywhere! It was around the same time as "Happy Birthday To Me". HELP!!!!!!

I remember it too, but unfortunately, as well as you do. Was it The Valentine's Day Massacre? Or was that a real event? Was it based on that? Or was it a cheesy High School V-day Dance gone maniacal. Yeah, I think that's what I remember, this slasher always had an empty mailbox at V-day. Ok, maybe not, but when you do find out they'll e-mail me to and my curiosity will be allayed.
Thanks for the thought. Now I'm trying to remember Jason, Freddie, Michael, and those good old boys from Texas with the chainsaws.

Now that this has started...Okay, I must admit that thinking back on the good old days has made me want to go out looking for a bagful of 80s slasher flicks and just sit back and enjoy. Other than My Bloody Valentine and Happy Birthday To Me (and the old Jason, Leatherface, Freddie, mainstream classics), are there other titles that fit the genre and would possibly be what I'm looking for? Call it old age or a lazy brain, but I really can't think of all the others I saw!

Well, my favorites were always Halloween, Nightmare on Elm St., The Omen, Rosmary's Baby, Demon Seed, and of course The Excorsist (which I still can't bring myself to watch the new one), for pure scare value. Jason just bloodied up the screen, but these flicks scared ya. And how about a real oldie, The Hand. I still have the creeps from watching that one too young. Thanx.

Back in the day, Eurotrash films were pretty popular. They're like B-movies, but some of the plots are actually better. Last year, quite a few of them were re-released by the Anchor Bay label (mostly the Dario Argento and Lucio Fulci films among a few others). Personally, I recommend Phenomena (Dario Argento), Shock (Mario Bava), and Blood For Dracula (an Andy Warhol film directed by Paul Morrissey).
Then, of course, there are the classics like Sleepaway Camp, Friday The 13th 1-7, Nightmare On Elm Street, The Omen, Halloween 1-4, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (a true classic!), Night Of The Living Dead, Rosemary's Baby, Alice Sweet Alice (starring a young Brooke Shields), The Exorcist, The Blob, Tremors, etc, etc, etc!

Thanks for the titles, especially the Eurotrash! I look forward to finding some of these and spending a few nights without any sleep (and just a wee bit of laughter)! If any others ever come to mind, I'm game!

Henry: Portrait Of A Serial Killer (VERY realistic), Manhunter (think: Silence Of The Lambs), and more Eurotrash: Tenebrae, Nosferatu (the remake with Klaus Kinski), The Stendhal Syndrome, Nightwatch (the Dutch version), Zombie, Dawn Of The Dead, Fando And Lis, and Don't Torture A Duckling...Enjoy!
