Subject: Steely Dan(my favorite band of all) *PIC*

Written By: Billy on 3/22/2001 at 10:35 p.m.

I totally forgot to add Steely to my list of favorite harmony bands. These guys can make goosebumps appear on you with their harmony. Also, their Jazz-Rock will put you in a trance, and deep imagination, even if you aren't smoking pot at the time(though that would be a extra bonus in depth LOL). Anyway, they are my favorite band of all time. Here are some of my favs(I'm only listing a few here, I have others to list).

1. Dirty Work

2. Deacon Blues

3. Kid Charlemagne

4. Here in the Western World

5. Babylon Sisters

6. Aja

7. Bodhisattva

8. My Old School

9. Any Major Dude would tell you

10. The Caves of Altamira

These are just the ones I could think of now, there are so many other favs I have by them.

What do yall think of Steely Dan? Do you know much by them?

Although I do collect them, and have most of their albums (don't have any of the solo stuff, though), Steely Dan has always been hit-or-miss w/ me. "Do it Again", "Rikki Don't Lose That Number", and "FM (No Static at All)" are probably my three faves by them. (It's about time I went back and listened to one of their hits collections again; haven't done that in quite a while.) Yes, they had/have a great vocal sound, and the music itself is very original, but what has always annoyed me the most about SD are their lyrics, which tend to make little or no sense...

I do personally love their lyrics, but I know what you mean. I recall when I first got into them, trying to understand their lyrics. FInally, I just quite trying and enjoyed the sounds, and just took "meaning" from bits and pieces of their stuff(which can be really fun and abstract).

Also, this isn't one of those bands that sounds best on their "greatest hits" LPs. They have so many great songs that never made radio play, so a greatest hits LP would only give you alot of the radio play songs.

Well, maybe so, but for me, having basically grown up on their hits, listening to one of their hits collections is what takes me back...

Damn, I remember what an annoying song "Hey Nineteen" was on the radio back when I was in the 7th grade, LOL!
