Subject: Kansas/Kerry Livgren Question

Written By: The Masque on 4/9/2001 at 9:57 p.m.

It's great to know Kerry Livgren is back with the band Kansas! But is he going to tour with them? Their official website leaves me in confusion. Kansas is going to tour this summer; does anyone know whether or not Livgren will be with them?

This past October, I went and saw Kansas in concert myself here in the NYC area. (First time I'd ever seen 'em live - and I had a killer 3rd row seat!) It was near the start of their current "Somewhere to Elsewhere" tour. As you probably know, the "StE" album features all six original members (lead singer/keyboardist Steve Walsh, guitarists Kerry Livgren & Richard Williams, bassist Dave Hope, violinist Robby Steinhardt, and drummer Phil Ehart), as well as later bassist Billy Greer. When I saw them six months ago, all were present that night w/ the exception of Livgren, and Greer was on bass in place of Hope...

It was definitely a great show - they received several standing ovations from the crowd. My only other complaint in addition to Livgren's absence was the length of the concert. Kansas were the headliners that night (in fact, the opening act was a local comedian), and they performed for only 83 minutes, during which they played 13 songs. (I wrote down the set list as the show went along.) But after the concert was over, I did actually get to meet & talk briefly w/ all five band members (Steve, Richard, Robby, Phil, and Billy) and get their autographs, etc., and I can say they were all very cool to the fans!

I happen to have a music buddy who is a Kansas-addict, and he tells me that KL is only performing w/ the band on those dates that are "close to home" - i.e., in the Midwest. So if you're seeing them in Kansas City or St. Louis, then Kerry will probably show up. Otherwise, it's my understanding that he won't be w/ the band full-time on this tour (or at least, that's been the case so far)...
