Subject: Help

Written By: Wilson on 10/17/2001 at 5:12 p.m.

Does anyone know who sung the song: "Moonlight Shadow", was it a band, an individual. The only name I could come up with was Mike Oldfield.....but I just feel that there's more to it.

"Moonlight Shadow" was indeed a big hit for Mike Oldfield in his native U.K. in the Summer of '83, but it failed to cross over to the U.S. charts. (He is best known here in the States for his big instrumental hit in the Spring of '74, "Tubular Bells", from the movie "The Exorcist".) Oldfield is primarily an instrumentalist; "Moonlight Shadow" featured Maggie Reilly on vocals. So because the song is actually from the '80s (not the '70s), has female vocals, and wasn't a hit here in the U.S., you're right, it probably isn't the song you're looking for...

So this is just a stab, but Cat Stevens scored a moderate hit here in the U.S. in the Summer of '71 w/ a song titled "Moon Shadow"...

Other '70s hits w/ similar titles were "Moonlight Special" by novelty singer Ray Stevens in the Summer of '74, "Moonlight Feels Right" by Starbuck in the Summer of '76, and "Moondance" by Van Morrison in the Fall of '77...
