There were so many good songs from this decade!  I would have to say that mine is "Right Down The Line" by Gerry Rafferty.  :)

i have tried to respond to this w/ a little story about that song ,but something always screws up ,so this time i'll make it real short; after accusing tom scholtz of borrowing the production style of "more than a feeling" from todd rundgren's "couldn't i just tell you" (i ran into him in a supermarket once - same one i ran into ben orr in -another story),he told me that he stole it from "tend my garden" by the james gang (at least i didn't accuse him of having written it w/ computers - a ridiculous rumor from the 70's). compare 'em and let me know what you think (similar riff, same handcalps,etc.,etc.)i knew i could't make it short.

wow! i knew someone cool had to be out there. if you like the previously mentioned (by you) stuff, you should definitely hunt down a copy of " a wizard, a true star" by todd rundgren. this is as strange/beautiful/powerful/intelligent (but not pretentious) as music gets (besides, maybe,"the lamb lies down on broadway" by genesis). list some more stuff that you're into if you want to -i'm just kind of curious if there are any other similarities, or possibly things that you would recommend that i haven't heard. so far i'm very impressed.

???I'm not too sure about this but I'm open to anyone's opinion. What does everyone think about the meaning behind hotel California. I've heard a lot of things. One is that it is just about California which I think is really pointless, Another is that it is about a satanic cult that was based within a hotel that wa actually on a road called california, and my own opinion is that it is about hell. The lyrices themselves give you the idea. "You can check in but you can never leave," very obvious. You cannot leave hell once you have been condemned. Next, "On a dark desert highway," sin leading down the wrong path. "There she stood in the doorway....this could be heaven and this could be hell...," is in my mind meant to be directed to the idea of the devil's temptations and not knowing if it is right or wrong. "Welcome to the hotel california, such a lovely place, living it up at the hotel california....," sin again. "She said we are all just prisoners here of our own device..," We are all prisoners of our own sin in life. "They stabbed it with thier steely knives but they just can't kill the beast," the devil. Once you have entered hell you cannot leave. "Eternal flame."

Id have to say for female...its a tie between Carly Simons Your So Vain and Carol Beyer Seger's Your Moving Out Today.

For Male....its also a tie between Dave Dundas' Jeans On and (cant think of the singer right now) the song is called Its All Over Now baby Blue.

Bands/ Groups, again a tie between Led Zepplins Over The Hills And far Away and Go Your Own Way by Fleetwood Mac.

Disco hit: Rare Earths Warm Ride and Partick Hernandez' Born To Be Alive.

Sorry for not sticking to just one...but its pretty impossisble to single out one song from one genre by one gender from one of the very few dacades where almost every song that hit the charts was a masterpeice.

ONE TIN SOLDIER
(The Legend of Billy Jack)
words and music by Dennis Lambert and Brian Potter
Copyright © 1969 by ABC / Dunhill Music, Inc.

Listen children to a story that was written long ago
'bout a kingdom on a mountain and the valley folk below.
On the mountain was a treasure buried deep beneath a stone,
and the valley people swore they'd have it for their very own.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day
on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.

So the people of the valley sent a message up the hill
asking for the buried treasure, tons of gold for which they'd kill.
Came an answer from the kingdom: "With our brothers we will share
all the secrets of our mountain, all the riches buried there."

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day
on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.

Now the valley cried with anger; mount your horses, draw your sword,
and they killed the mountain people, so they won their just reward.
Now they stood beside the treasure on the mountain, dark and red,
turned the stone and looked beneath it. "Peace on earth" was all it said.

Go ahead and hate your neighbor, go ahead and cheat a friend.
Do it in the name of heaven, justify it in the end.
There won't be any trumpets blowin' come the judgment day
on the bloody morning after one tin soldier rides away.
