Subject: The Commodores (any era)

Written By: Paul on 05/08/04 at 6:49 pm

Depending on what mood I'm in...

Romantic (rare!) - 'Three Times A Lady'...no question! Although 'Oh No' has its moments...

Fun-kay! - 'Machine Gun' (terrific instrumental) is hard to top...

I have to pass on this one Paul.

I know CF will roll her eyes, but at least I am consistent here.  ;)

They (and Lionel Ritchie) bore me to sleep  :o  Sorry....

I still don't understand what you see wrong with his voice, Fuss, but you are entitled to your own opinion.  :)

My favorite is the very funky "Brick House".  ;D

Nothing !  I'm sure his voice is better than mine even if he were singing under wet cement...(hmmm, there's an idea....OOPS  Sorry !  ;D)

I have no other justification than I just don't like it, I find it hard to explain why, it just makes me sleepy  :-\\

I had to go with "Other". Why?

Because one of my favorite songs from the '80s is missing from the list...

#1
Lady (You Bring Me Up) (1986?, from a 1981, album)

For a distant #2, I'll go with...

Easy (1977)

;D

I picked "Other"  and my favorite song is "Too Hot Ta Trot" with "Brick House as a close second.

Have to go with Three Times a Lady. It reminds me of these two guys who I went to tech school (in the service) with. As we were going from the dorm to class and back again-marching, those two would always be singing that song. Not exactly a "marching tune" but I guess I always like to pretend that they were seranading to me.  ;D

Brickhouse - I love this song! Wonderful song celebrating the curves of the African-American woman!

Night shift - great tune remembering the soul singers of yesterday!

I like the '80s and Lionel's solo career, I guess I'll pick "Oh No".

Does anyone think the latter stuff he did with The Commodores was sort of an influence on his solo career (i.e. smooth pop ballads and dance songs, with a slight pop-wave influence, perhaps)?

I think "Oh No" is closer to "Say You Say Me" than "Brick House".

It must have been on of the reasons for him leaving. If you listen to 1978's "Natural High" set is pretty much filled with the usual 70s funk grooves they were known for earlier. Three Times A Lady is just about the only ballad on there and it went straight to no 1. On "Heroes" the 1980 album a few more ballads were featured and Lionel left soon after.
Rumor has it that they split up because of the different music directions, yet The Commodores ended up doing just about the same kinda stuff that Lionel did himself on their Nightshift LP. Go figure  ???

Actually, as I'm a '70's funk fan, I have to vote for "Machine Gun".

I know not a common favorite, but this was a popular instrumental, a favorite for those who like to "pop and lock" that "broke" them on radio back in '74. It was their first real "hit".

Most will remember it for its heavy synth/keyboard rhythms and hook, also used in the "Boogie Nights" scene where Dirk Diggler dances at the disco after his first big break in film (he talks about his new shirt being "imported Italian polyester" ;D)

Classic tune for disco and funk aficionados...

I gotta go with "Brick House".

As I recall, Lionel's Mum was a churchgoing lady.  When Brick House came out, she had some 'splaining to do to the other church ladies.
