Subject: Gordon Lightfoot

Written By: AL-B on 05/25/04 at 9:33 pm

I've always liked Gordon Lightfoot, even when I was 5 years old. Even though I think "Carefree Highway" has a better melody, I went with "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" because it has such great lyrics and is a heartfelt tribute to the men who died in that tragedy.

"If You Could Read My Mind" is my favourite song by Gordo.  Very interesting song structure.

"Carefree Highway" was also a cool tune.  I never really liked "Fitzgerald" though as it seemed to drag on like a funeral dirge, which was probably the idea. ???

Gordo rocks  8)

I like Gordo in this order

1. If You Could Read My Mind :)
2. Carefree Highway
3. The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald

And you know AL-B, some people equate Gordon Lightfoot's music with Barry Manilow's. It's not true but there are some that do.  ::)

LyricBoy, that bear looks sort of demented. What's the story with "the bear"? ???

I grew up with Gordon Lightfoot's music so I love ALL of it!  But I would have to say that my favorite song is "Carefree Highway", followed by "The Wreck Of The Edmund Fitzgerald".  :)

A superb yet totally underrated talent...he's written and performed many great songs, of which I've chosen 'If You Could Read My Mind'

If You Could Read My Mind

I had a terrible time with this.  I really like the first three songs equally, but for different reasons......

I think "If You Could Read My Mind" is the prettiest though  :)

If You Could Read My Mind.  I liked Fitzgerald too, but like LyricBoy said, it just dragged on like a funeral dirge.

Didn't someone do a remake of If You Could Read My Mind with dance beat?  I don't think it was too long ago. Anyway, IMO, whoever remade it should have left it alone.  It is such a pretty song the way it was originally.

Perish the thought!  Nobody should even attempt to lay a finger on Gordon's songs!!!

Sorry to say it, but someone did.  I've heard snippets of the dance version while flipping throught radio stations.  I never listened the the dance version all the way through because what I did hear was enough to make me change the station. :(

I've heard the "disco" version many times. And actually it's not too bad. ???

It's one of these...

Closest thing to Canadian Royalty that we would ever see.  :) ;D

The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald.
An old fashioned folk ballad about a recent event.  That is, recent when the song was first popular.
"Superior they say never gives up her dead when the gales of November come early."
You know the horrible meaning behind that?  Lake Superior is so deep and so cold that few organisms live at its bottom.  In most lakes a sunken body would swell up with bacteria, enabling it to float back to the surface.  In Superior, no little critters are there to invade the corpse, so it stays put.

Hmmmm...maybe that's where we should put all those Wham! CDs, albums and cassettes. Along with any Village People we can find -- that's their albums now, not them. (or maybe not just their albums?)

;) ;D

When the song first came out, I thought it was about something that happened in the 1800s or so and somewhat fictional. Then I discovered that it really did happen and in 1975. Now, when I listen to the song, I can't help getting teary eyed.

Sundown -- It's not necessarily the best song on the list of choices, but it always takes me back to a very mundane but very happy moment in time and that makes it special to me.

"If you could read my mind" was the favorite song of legendary porn star John C. Holmes.

When they recently made a movie about him, his former girlfriend wrote to Gordon Lightfoot and asked for permission to include the song at the end of the movie, which he agreed to.

I often get a Gordon Lightfoot lyric stuck in my head.  His opening verse in the Northern Lights song 'Tears Are Not Enough' that goes ...

"As every day goes by.  How can we close our eyes"
