http://www.engelbert.com/2000.html

This goes back to my childhood when I'd be riding around with my dad in his '65 Chevy Biscayne and he always listened to this adult contemporary AM station (KFAB) out of Omaha. Most of it I didn't mind (some of it I still like..Gordon Lightfoot, Paul Simon for example) but whenever Engelbert would come on I couldn't (and still can't) stand it. I'd actually start whining for him to change the station, and of course he'd tell me to shut the hell up. His songs were cheesy, he sang like a bad opera singer, and what is up with that name???

Just about any song from the 70s.

A few that haven't been mentioned yet,

Teddy Bear- (can't remember who sang it-it was a trucker/CB song)
Run Joey Run (Again, I can't remember who did it and I'm not too sure that I WANT to remember)

That's all I can think of (and I guess that is enough)

If I had to chose only one-I would say the sappiest song EVER has to be Feelings.

I always liked that song! :)

Dying flame
You`re free again
Who could, love
Do that to you

All dressed in black
He won`t be coming back
Look, save your tears
Got years and years

The pains of seventeen`s unreal
They`re only dreams
Save your crying for the day

Fool if you think it`s over
Cause you said goodbye
Fool if you think it`s over
Tell you why

New born eyes
Always cry with pain
At the first look
At the morning sun
Fool if you think it`s over
It`s just begun...

:) ;D

Got to agree with 'Teddy Bear', Cat...it was by Red Sovine and, for some reason, it eventually became a major hit here in the UK in 1981...(Don't blame me! I didn't buy it!)

'Run Joey Run' was by David Geddes (which we didn't chart...we have some taste, after all...! - his follow-up 'Blind Man In The Bleachers' was also vomit-inducing...did he have a job-lot of these songs?!!)

(For the record, I would just like to say that Engelbert is class...!!)

Ah, yes, "Longer," though the song does have the comparative "higher" in the lyrics.

BTW, this song and the one above were from the 80's.  :)

Weeeelll, it's on the cusp, could go either way.  Don't want to become an Air Supply historian here, but the album "Lost in Love" featuring the song of the same title was released in 1979, however, the single didn't climb the charts until spring, 1980.  It's a '70s recorded and released song, but an '80s hit.

I like "motherhumperdincker" ;D

The original Englebert Humperdinck (1838-1921) was a native Siegburg, Germany.  As composer of the Romantic period, his most famous work is a fairy tale opera "Hanzel Und Gretyl."

The British singer we all know and love was born Gerry Dorsey, 1936, in Madras, India.

Since Bobby Goldsboro's "Honey" technically doesn't count as '70s, I'll go with the equally sappy "Watching Scotty Grow."

Gulp! That was Blue Swede mangling the life out of a great BJ Thomas song...to be fair tho', it wasn't their idea - it was 'ooga chakka'd some years before by a British 'singer' by the name of Jonathan King - Blue Swede's version was a direct copy of that arrangement...

I never understood the "ooga-chaka-ooga-ooga" part. People would laugh at it when the song came out and it was so awful some DJs used to skip the intro all together or played a version that didn't include it.

But to be honest I always thought the rest of the song wasn't half bad. Soooooo you're telling me it was Jonathan "Everyone's Gone to the Moon" King, who had originally did those stupid "ooga-chaka"s! Unreal! :o

The very same! Apparently he was trying to get a 'reggae' feel (wha'?) into the song...

Never one for a half-original idea, 'Everyone's Gone To The Moon' was his attempt at being Dylan with the slightly off-kilter lyrics...

(And this brings me nicely full-circle with sappy 70's songs)...he also did a cover of George Baker's 'Paloma Blanca' - an extremely banal song of European origin...

One listen to that and you'll prefer the 'ooga-chaka's, believe me...!!

Cor! Do I heck, mandamoo...! I vividly remember this being played constantly around the house at the time, and I couldn't have been no more than four years old...!

Heh heh. Ray Dorset had a unique singing voice.

Mungo Jerry seemed to sing a lot about their life experiences. Most of their songs were optimistic (even the quaintly amusing 'Somebody stole my wife'). Obviously there is an exception to the rule and I think their most poignant song is 'You don't have to be in the army to fight in the war'.

Ray Dorset wrote 'Feels like I'm in love' sung by Kelly Marie.

Chh chh-chh, uh, chh chh-chh, uh
Chh chh-chh, uh, chh chh-chh, uh

In the summertime when the weather is high
You can stretch right up and touch the sky
When the weather's fine
You got women, you got women on your mind
Have a drink, have a drive
Go out and see what you can find

/ C - / / F / F C - / G / F C - /

If her daddy's rich, take her out for a meal
If her daddy's poor, just do as you feel
Speed along the lane
Do a ton, or a ton and twentyfive
When the sun goes down, you can make it
Make it good in a lay-by

We're no threat, people, we're not dirty, we're not mean
We love everybody, but we do as we please
When the weather is fine
We go fishing or go swimming in the sea
We're always happy
Life's for living, yeah, that's our philosophy

Sing along with us, dee-dee-dee-dee-dee
Da-da-da-da-da, yeah, we're hap-happy
Da-da-da-da-dah....

Chh chh-chh, uh, chh chh-chh, uh
Chh chh-chh, uh, chh chh-chh, uh

When the winter's here, yeah it's party time
Bring a bottle
Wear you're bright clothes, it'll soon be summertime
And we'll sing again
We'll go drivin' or maybe we'll settle down
If she's rich, if she's nice
Bring you're friends and we'll all go into town

More triv...Ray originally intended for 'Feels Like I'm In Love' for none other than Elvis Presley! He did give the rough draft to Elvis's management, but heard nothing in return...whether the King actually saw the thing, I couldn't say...

I didn't know it until I heard it mentioned probably just 5 years ago but the band Mungo Jerry is from England. I would have never guessed it. Never. ???

And I actually never saw what they looked like until, again about 5 years ago. In the few seconds that I saw of the video clip of them doing their song, they looked like they were totally stoned out of their minds.  :o

Not quite, Bobby...but he wasn't far from it - Ray originally wrote the song whilst he was still in MJ (I don't know whether they recorded it) in around 1974...the song was performed in a mid-tempo 'RnB' style - far removed from the disco workout it eventually became...

Ray did record a solo version, and as he and Kelly Marie shared the same music publishing company, it was eventually passed on to her...

As for MJ looking 'stoned out of their minds' (zcrito) - they were probably all petrified more than anything! Such was their rapid rise to fame, they were still holding down day jobs when 'Summertime' broke big - they even upstaged the legendary Grateful Dead at the Hollywood Music Festival here in 1970...

Ray Dorset used his voice in lots of different ways (a bit like Bobby McFerrin) and he complemented the offbeat rhythm with the sound effects. I don't believe it is anything more than that. If you listen to any of his other songs (Have a whiff on me, Alright Alright Alright . . .), he uses different vocal sounds to complement the skiffle type sound he was creating. Mungo Jerry barely had a decent drummer so they probably needed this technique.

I also have to say how much I love the song 'Mighty Man' - the piano work is incredible.

If you saw the video it showed the 'instrument', it was a long stick with the top half literally covered with beer bottle tops, as they tapped the floor with the bottom end the top end created the sound.

The thing about the Pushbike Song was the somewhat 'dodgy' chorus:

shhhhh oooh oooh shhhhhh ahhhh!
shhhhh oooh oooh shhhhhh ahhhh!
shhhhh oooh oooh shhhhhh ahhhh!
shhhhh oooh oooh shhhhhh ahhhh!

I mean - has anybody actually had an orgasm on a bike?! :)

I like the cover notes for a cover version of the Pushbike Song done by Anita Harris, which wonders if the backing singers are pleasuring themselves rather than singing.  I wonder if this why no female has actually sung this song all the way through (chrous included).

Tee Hee :)

Marc Bolan was forever throwing metaphors into his songs...it became something of a trademark of his!

But that was nothing compared to 'Deborah'...sample lyric 'Oh Deborah, always look like a zebra...'  ??? :D

Your honesty's too much.

The 1994 version of 'Sometimes When We Touch' by Dan Hill has a less sappy feel to it.  It was a duet with a woman named Riqué Franks and though it didn't top the original, it did give Mr. Hill yet another Top 40 in Canada

I can see Mr. Hill saying, "Hey kid, you can buy that Black Sabbath record, but it won't get you laid, mine will!"
