I like all of these songs but "Dancing Queen" is the one that stood out the most for me that year.  :)

I would agree, Karen...but we had that the previous year, so I went for...

'When I Need You' - Leo Sayer

As an 'other' (or two!), 'Chanson D'Amour' (ManTran) and 'Romeo' (Mr Big) were highly enjoyable...

Really?  That's interesting.

'When I Need You' - Leo Sayer

Good choice.  I love how he does all the different voices for that song.  :)

As an 'other' (or two!), 'Chanson D'Amour' (ManTran) and 'Romeo' (Mr Big) were highly enjoyable...

I have not heard of either of those songs.  I wonder how hard they'd be to find....

1977 was a good year for me. Junior in school, parties and loads of friends. I'd have to go with Dancing Queen. This is the kind of song that will never get old. Hopefully no one will mess  it up by doing a remake, especially a rap artist.

"I Go Crazy" is one of those songs you hear for years and never really know when it first came out. Sort of like Harry Chapin's "Taxi". ???

I checked top40db.net. They live and breath the Billboard charts and they show it with a debut of "Aug '77".

To tell you the truth, I always thought it was an early '80s song since it remained popular for so many years. It was in the Guinness book of records at one time for its chart activity. I'm not going to double-check that for accuracy though. ???

(Harry Chapin's Taxi, debut: March, 1972) ???

;) :)

To me a song's date is always when I first hear it. Which, depending on the radio stations where one lives could be a difference of months or years from the time it actually shows up on the charts...

This Beat Goes On/Switching to Glide - The Kings, charted summer 1980, first played where I live, spring 1982!
To me it'll always be a '82 song.

Ah, The Kings, "Switching to Glide," they used to play that song all the time at the roller rink we used to go to when I was a kid.  I forgot all about it until it appeared on Rhino's "New Wave Hits of the '80s" series.

Some great songs in this list Karen, I picked "Car Wash" as my favourite, mainly because I heard it in a crowded bar in Blackpool on Saturday night. I was in a bar called "Lionel's" where the host (Lionel Vinyl) was wearing a 70s suit and an Afro haircut. He led the whole place in a dance routine to "Car Wash" and it went down a storm, even though most of the crowd were about 20 years younger than me and couldn't possibly remember the original!

My other abiding memory of 1977 is of course punk rock:

"God Save The Queen" - The Sex Pistols
"Complete Control" - The Clash
"Peaches" - The Stranglers
"Oh Bondage Up Yours" - X Ray Spex
"Gary Gilmore's Eyes" - The Adverts

I have to say I hate most of the songs you listed...especially Rose Royce's 'Carwash.' But I voted for Hotel California, followed closely by Dancing Queen. The early 70s were much better than the mid-late 70s with classic rock, etc before the disco era.

]I was so-so with 1977.  The year didn't start out to bad, but the year ended not to greatly.
I was also in junior high and eighth grade was a lot of fun, ninth not sooo much.

I'd have to go with "Blinded By The Light" by Manfred Mann's Earth Band as my favorite tune of that year (although it was released in 1976 it didn't go to #1 until February of that year).

My second favorite would have to be Meco's "Star Wars Medley" (especially the Cantina Band part).

My third favorite not mentioned here would have to be the one-hit wonder "Strawberry Letter #23" by Brothers Johnson.

I also still love and probably my fourth favorite (another one not mentioned) is Rita Coolidge's remake of "Your Love Is Lifting Me Higher & Higher" (I also have a huge crush on Rita Coolidge, who couldn't -- if you were a man at least?)

My favorite novelty song of that year would have to be "Telephone Man" by Merry Wilson.  That was so humorous, don't you think?

And I have to give kudos to the theme to the TV show that premiered that Fall:  "Soap" -- that will always be 1977 to me.

I Chose Manfred Mann's Earth Band "Blinded By the Light" as that is one song I can listen to over and over again.. I have countless 1977 songs I love, but I can't think of all of them right at the moment.. more later..
