Subject: Favorite Song from 1974

Written By: CeramicsFanatic on 09/02/04 at 1:07 pm

This one was tough, as a lot of good songs came out in 1974.

I would have to say that my favorite from this list is "Annie's Song" (John Denver), followed by "Sundown" (Gordon Lightfoot).  :)

There's an understatement, Karen...

From the above, 'Sundown' gets it...

...but (and I make absolutely no apologies for repetition...!) the best one this year was 'When Will I See You Again' by The Three Degrees - so wonderful, it hurts...

It's funny, but as I was making this poll I just had a feeling that you would say something about this song, Paul.  ;)

I agree with you in that it is a fantastic little number.  The reason I didn't include it in this list is because I was trying to stick with U.S. #1's.  :-\\

Heh! I knew that...!!

Well, it did the trick here - and that's good enough for me...!

How about next time I do a poll with all #2's from this side of the world?  I won't do one particular year, just a mix of stuff from the 'Me' decade.  :D

Well C.F., I'll have to go with "Bennie & The Jets"  followed by "Sundown"  :)

Wow, not much to choose from in that list.

Let's see, out of the ones I like...

The Way We Were - Barbra Streisand
Rock The Boat - Hues Corporation
I Shot The Sheriff - Eric Clapton
Kung Fu Fighting - Carl Douglas
Cat's In The Cradle - Harry Chapin

I'll go with "Rock The Boat" by Hues Corporation.  :)

Those songs weren't "rock" but I believe someone in-the-know once said:

"What do you need new bands for? Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974 - it's a scientific fact!"

True enough, zcrito...1974 will certainly NOT go down as a great year for rock....about all I can recall from the Rock genre of the top of my head is...Bad Company's self-titled LP....Joe Walsh...and the Doobies great LP called "What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits"  ;)

No. Homer is right. Everyone knows rock attained perfection in 1974.
Just the songs listed in the poll aren't really "rock" songs from 1974.

"What Were Once Vices Are Now Habits" -- I always liked that "Another Park, Another Sunday" song.  :)

No. Sorry. I only like 5 out of the 10 you listed. That's just a sad 50%.  :(

Hmmm...

I guess I'll have to do a poll just for 'rock' songs of 1974.

I certainly have, Mark...and, just like 'Billy', it was a British song 'covered' for the US market - our 'original' was performed by a group called Candlewick Green, and it was their only success...

Nothing much to choose from between both versions, but a good song nonetheless...

Who Do You Think You Are charted here in Australia.  However, Billy Don't Be A Hero was a hit here for Paper Lace.

I voted for Cats In The Cradle by Harry Chapin (very hard decision to make out of that lot!) and I've got to agree with Paul, "When Will I See You Again" is a fabulous song - it really takes me back :)

From the list, I picked 'Rock the Boat'.  I also like 'Rock On' by David Essex, both that version and Michael Damian's 1989 remake.  :)
