Subject: Your Favourite '70s Mega Hit

Written By: Alice on 09/24/04 at 4:04 am

A single had to be Number One on the both sides of the Atlantic to become a mega hit. Choose your favourite one, please!

My Top 5 would be:

3) My Sweet Lord - George Harrison (1970)
2) Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel (1970)

and

1) Another Brick In The Wall - Pink Floyd (1979)

Difficult...any of half a dozen could've be chosen, but I went for...

'If You Leave Me Now' - Chicago (Good group, beautiful song...)

Hmmm...there are some good songs in the list. The ones that standout for me are

Bridge Over Troubled Water - Simon & Garfunkel (1970)
Dancing Queen - ABBA (1976)
If You Leave Me Now - Chicago (1976)
Night Fever - The Bee Gees (1978)

(actually there are about 5 others I also like)

I went with...
If You Leave Me Now - Chicago (1976)

Why? It just sounds right today. I guess for sentimental reasons, that's all.

I was torn but finally pick I Will Survive followed VERY closely by Another Brick in The Wall (even thought I thought Part III was better than Part II and Part II was the mega hit)

Too many great songs on this list!!!

Today I decided to choose "Annie's Song" (John Denver) just because I think it's such a pretty song.  :)

Runner-ups include:

"If You Leave Me Now"
"Night Fever"
"December, 1963 (Oh What A Night)"

Great songs to Choose From!
From the list:  If you leave me now-Chicago (luvvv them)

Some of my fave's:

Yellow Brick Road  -Sir Elton-1973
Benny & The Jets    "        1974
Philadelphia Freedom "        1975

We Are The Champions-Queen-1978
Killing Me Softly-Roberta Flack-1973
What A Fool Believes-Doobies-1979
Play That Funky Music-Wild Cherry-1976
Rich Girl-Hall & Oates-1977

Geez, there were so many amazing songs in the 70's.  I despised the 80's and the 90's left me..just left me bored, for the most part.

Some good choices, almost went with another brick in the wall, but since my favorite song from that album was comfortably numb it was difficult, but I went with "Tears of a Clown" because, when smokey sings.......OH BABY

I picked Another Brick In the Wall. I never get tired of listening to that song even though I've heard it umpteen times!

My second pick would be Annie's Song. The lyrics are so beautiful that I almost cry.  "Let me die in your arms..."

I went with Another Brick In The Wall...How could I not?!? All those songs kick butt!!! Love em all...But, the song that was huge for me, more so than any of the songs in that list was I Dont Like Mondays by the Boomtown Rats (1979). I dont know if that was huge in other parts of the world...but in Australia, it was massive!!!

This is where I saw it...

http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20041127/ap_en_ce/music_pink_floyd_2

I remember when I first heard it. I couldn't believe Pink Floyd could come out with something like that. A very negative song from them.

'The song attracted controversy for the chorus sung by the children: "We don't need no education/ We don't need no thought control/ No dark sarcasm in the classroom/ Teachers, leave them kids alone." '
