Here's what I could come up with..so far.

Donny & Marie

I'm Leaving It All Up to You
Morning Side of the Mountain      3
Make the World Go Away

Donny

Sweet And Innocent
Go Away Little Girl                        4
Puppy Love
The Twelfth of Never

Marie                                1

Paper Roses

Cher

Half-Breed
Gypsies, Tramps & Thieves                  3
Dark Lady

Looks like Cher loses...as far as the 70's go.

I chose Sonny and Cher because I cant remember a time when Ive actually seen Donnie and Marie. Im not very sure if their show actually aired here in Australia, but if it did it was before I can remember, either that or I was outside playing.

I have very very vague memories of seeing what might have been the Donny and Marie show.  Possibly a Christmas special.  I remember 'little' Jimmy Osmond coming on near the end to sing Long-haired Lover from Liverpool and it was released as a single after that (in the UK at least)

Cher's long sexy legs, Marie's teeth, Donny gets the award for goofiest and Sonny the most untalented celebrity ever- neck and neck with Paris Hilton of course.

You forgot "Take Me Home", which was a disco hit, so that would be 4!

My 70''s self would have voted for "Donnie and Marie", since their show seemed to be more oriented towards kids.  My current self would probably vote for Sonny and Cher (seem more "timeless", and less dated, than Donnie & Marie).  Cher has also "aged" better than Marie -- think about it, she has been popular from the late 60's through the present day!

Actually, Sonny was a pretty good song producer and writer in the 60's.  He produced all of Sonny & Cher's as well as Cher's solo stuff in the 60's.....in fact he's quite underrated and he learned from the best...Phil Spector(crazy loon that he is).

My vote is for Sonny and Cher.  Donny and Marie was just creepy to me as they bickered and cooed at each other like a married couple, and sang love songs....ick.

Welp, it's time to lug out the Joel Whitburn books to see how many pop-chart hits these guys had. (My "Bubbling Under" book goes up to 2004, but my top-100 book only goes to 1996, so songs like Cher's "Believe" aren't in here.)

"BUBBLING UNDER" SONGS (Songs that didn't quite make the top-100 but were from #101- roughly 130)
Sonny & Cher (as "Caesar & Cleo") - 1 ("Love is Strange")
Donny & Marie - 0

Cher - 4 (including a version of "I Got You Babe" with Beavis & Butthead)
Donny - 1 ("You've Got Me Dangling on a String")
Marie - 1 ("In My Little Corner of the World")

TOP-100'S
Sonny & Cher - 20
Donny & Marie - 7

Cher - 30
Donny - 20
Marie - 3

TOP-40'S
Sonny & Cher - 11
Donny & Marie - 6

Cher - 21
Donny - 14
Marie - 3

TOP-10'S
Sonny & Cher - 6
Donny & Marie - 2

Cher - 11
Donny - 6
Marie - 1 ("Paper Roses")

#1'S
Sonny & Cher - 1 ("I Got You Babe")
Donny & Marie - 0

Cher - 3 (again, not counting "Believe" or anything else after '96)
Donny - 1 ("Go Away Little Girl")
Marie - 0

Old post, but I agree. The only thing from Sonny & Cher I liked ever, was "I Got You Babe" - other than that, their show/music/relationship, none of it, ever appealed to me.

Donny & Marie seemed nicer for sure. I even watched their talk show which briefly was on the air, from roughly 1998-2000. I liked his comeback song circa 1988 - a medium ballad, called "Secret Emotion".

Since I got my Joel Whitburn adult-contemporary book, I'm trying to find that Bobby Goldsboro vs. John Devner thread to give the rundown of AC hits they had. But I came across this along the way, so I figured what the heck, I might as well give the adult-contemporary rundown on these guys, too.

Since Billboard's AC chart throughout its history has ranged from 15-50 positions, I won't include a separate top-40's list.
This book goes up to 2001.

ADULT-CONTEMPORARY HITS
Donny & Marie - 7
Sonny & Cher - 3

Cher - 23
Donny - 15
Marie - 2

TOP 10'S
Donny & Marie - 3
Sonny & Cher - 3

Cher - 14
Donny - 3
Marie - 1 ("Paper Roses")

#1'S
Donny & Marie - 2
Sonny & Cher - 1 ("All I Ever Need is You")

Cher - 2
Marie - 1
Donny - 0

What about all the other Variety Show "couples" (or "Triplets")?

Shields & Yarnell
Captain & Tennille
Tony Orlando & Dawn
Marilyn McCoo and Billy Davis
The Smothers Brothers
Barbara Mandrell and the Mandrell Sisters

Then there are the SIngles & Ensemble casts:

Carol Burnette & Company
Dick Van Dyke & Company
Flip WIlson
The Brady Bunch Comedy Hour
Rich Little
Sha Na Na
The Muppets
Dolly Parton

I know there were a bunch more, but that is all I can recall at the moment.

I myself find it hard to compare, because the shows were so different.  S&C was more of the "late 60's early 70's" feel about it.  D&M was much different, with much less inuendo and much more family oriented.

The D&M show was just a watered down version of S&C, in my opinion.
Donny and Marie even borrowed the sarcastic bickering schtick from Sonny and Cher but it wasn't as funny when they did it.  :)
