As much as I enjoyed both...I'll have to give my nod to Led Zeppelin :)

this is a joke, right? I like Deep Purple but can't really think of any songs other then Smoke on the Water and Hush, with Led Zeppelin I can think of many

aside from the 2 songs you mentioned these 3 still get played alot on rock radio :)

Never got into Deep Purple beyond their radio hits. Led Zeppelin I have liked since I was around 15.

Deffinately Led Zepp. We used to live next door to a band that only knew how to play one song and one song only-Smoke on the Water. That was all we heard 24/7 it seemed like. AND THEY WERE AWFUL!!!! To this day I can't hear that song without putting my hands to my ears and screaming. That band ruined that song for me FOR LIFE!

when i used to play guitar, i learned 'smoke on the water'. it's an easy song to play and i can't listen to it now without thinking how horrible i used to play it.

I thought Led Zeppelin were a 'heavy' metal band, but when I actually listened to them (the only one I'd heard was Stairway to Heaven) they didn't seem very heavy at all. Overall, they were great with guitars but I don't think their songs were all that special. They still retain my respect for basically starting the heavy metal movement with such bands as Black Sabbath, Grateful Dead, Jethro Tull, Uriah Heep etc in the late 60s early 70s. How many good bands have come from the UK? Pbly more than the US, they are definately overepresented relative to population.
I'm not really a fan of the screeching vocals. Best songs would have to be 'Over The Hills And Far Away', 'Tangerine', 'Rock and Roll' and 'Stairway to heaven.'

Zeppelin had POWER and PRESENCE! Their music defined every phase of heavy metal, hard rock and rock! The only WAY to describe them is "THE BEST"!!!!!

Hey, they even had David Coverdale on Vocals AND the late great Tommy Bolin as the guitarest...though only for a short time.
