Yes, hated by many (at the time), but there's no denying it filled a need and there were some dam' fine efforts that came out of it...

I could happily listen to most of these, but the glory goes to...

'Mighty Real'
'Born To Be Alive'
'Upside Down'
'Boogie Oogie Oogie'

...but step forward 'Le Freak', for being one of the classiest disco tunes (and indeed groups) of that era...I've yet to hear a bad word about a Chic record, which I think says it all...

Throw in...

'Boogie Nights' (as Mark quite rightly stated, although 'The Groove Line' has started to re-grow on me - thanks to young Karen...!)
'Take That To The Bank' (Shalamar)
'(Ain't Gonna Bump No More) With No Big Fat Woman' (Joe Tex)

...and possibly disco's last stand, before mutating into 'club' music...

'Feels Like I'm In Love' (Kelly Marie - 1980)

I doubt "Rock Lobster" would count, despite being 70s.  It's New Wave.

Anyway I picked "YMCA", "The Hustle", and "Stayin' Alive".  :)

I like most Disco. 8)

I just wish that whenever they have Disco nights in clubs or in radio stations that Dee Jays would play more of what wasn't in the top 40, which was, IMO, just as good. I actually get tired of hearing the same hits over and over. Then again, that's my same problem with music in almost every genre. There's a whole lot of Disco never, ever getting exposure. And in the 70's and early 80's, it only got the exposure in Discotheques. It's a shame, really.

Not at all afraid, and I'm a Child of the '80s!

I just chose from your named list, "If I Can't Have You"!  God, I love that!  It's awesome and it has a Latin step to boot!

But I don't like to "dis" the other songs; well, some I either don't know or are overrated.  "I Will Survive" is probably the most overrated; it's good but not only overplayed (as far as retro music goes), but I don't have to hear it again because it just doesn't quite.....bring it home.

Here are what I really really like on the list, not in any order:

That's the Way I Like It - KC and the Sunshine Band  5 (6.7%)
YMCA - Village People  1 (1.3%)
If I Can't Have You - Yvonne Elliman  2 (2.7%)  duh!!
Funkytown - Lipps, Inc  2 (2.7%)  - I consider this the perfect "transition" song from the '70s to the '80s - esp. that it was a hit in 1980!
Heart of Glass - Blondie  4 (5.3%)    Love Blondie!
Stayin' Alive - Bee Gees  3 (4%)
Last Dance - Donna Summer  0 (0%)    - LOVE Donna!
Ring My Bell - Anita Ward  1 (1.3%)
Upside Down - Diana Ross  4 (5.3%)
Turn the Beat Around - Vicki Sue Robinson  1 (1.3%)
I Love the Nightlife - Alicia Bridges  0 (0%)

The greatest disco song of all time was undoubtedly Donna Summer's I Feel Love (the extended version)
Sylvester comes a close second though. Sylvester's backing singers', Two Tons of Fun, also did a pretty good job in the '80s (when they called themselves The Weather Girls) with It's Raining Men...

I like most of the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack songs.

And don't forget:

Chic: Dance Dance Dance (Yowsa Yowsa Yowsa)
Dee D. Jackson: Automatic Lover
The S.O.S. Band: Take Your Time, Do It Right
Nu Shooz: I Can't Wait (post-disco disco)
Donna Summer: MacArthur Park (J.Webb)
Donna Summer: I Feel Love (w/ Giorgio Moroder)
Donna Summer: Love to Love You Baby (ibid.)
Giorgio Moroder: Chase (theme from Midnight Express)*
Exile: Kiss You All Over
Rolling Stones: Emotional Rescue (not officially disco, but definitely discoid)
Rod Stewart: Do Ya Think I'm Sexy

Rick Dees: Disco Duck NO!

*Still heard as bumper music on "Coast to Coast AM"

But so was Blondie's "Heart of Glass". I was wondering why it was on here. :-\\

Some fans of early Blondie were not happy with the disco sound of "Heart of Glass," but that's tough!  There was a "Disco Mix" of "Heart of Glass," and a more New Wavey mix, but the song essentially has a disco beat.  You might have also heard B-52's at your local discoteque, and maybe Talking Heads' "Life During Wartime."  As the kids on American Bandstand used to say, "It's got a good beat, and you can dance to it."

Disco was most certainly alive in 1980.  In fact, it never really died.  All that Flashdance stuff in 1983 was disco to the core.  They just didn't use the word "disco" anymore thanks to the whole "disco sucks" movement.  Throughout the '80s, you had big hits like Nu Shooz' "I Can't Wait," Stacy Q's "Two of Hearts," Madonna's "Get Into the Groove," Janet Jackson's "What Have You Done for Me Lately," and New Order's "The Perfect Kiss."  Most dance hits of the '80s were disco, or heavily influenced by disco.  Then there was "Funk," ala Rick James and the Gap Band.  The terms "Soul" and "R&B" continued to be used for slower numbers.  In the '90s, it all got mixed in with various forms of Techno, House, Hip-Hop, and so-called "R&B."  Whatever you do, just don't call it d-i-s-c-o!

But funk, R&B, and disco are definitely not mutually exclusive genres. Disco songs can definitely be funky and certainly R&B. They're still disco.

Below is my list of my all time favorite 'disco' songs.

Note that some may NOT technically be disco, but I remember my Mum coming home from the discos around that time and bringing with her stacks of singles which she played for me the next morning. (Back then, at least here in Newcastle Australia, you could buy the singles of the songs being played at the clubs, and in my Mothers words, if it was played at a disco, then it was disco):

Rasputin - Boney M

Shake Your Body (Down To The Ground) and Blame It On The Boogie - The Jacksons

You Took The Worlds Right Out Of My Mouth (Hot Summer Night) - Meatloaf

Car Wash - Rose Royce

Love To Love You Baby, Hot Stuff and On The Radio - Donna Summer

Heart Of Glass - Blondie

Just What I Needed - The Cars

Copacabanna - Barry Manilow

I Gotcha - Joe Tex

Right Back Where We Started From - Maxine Nightingale
Im Every Woman - Chaka Kahn

Stars On 45 (The Beates) - Stars On 45

Disco Inferno - The Trammps (??? I think)

Fanfare For The Common Man - (?????) There was a disco version of this music, but I dont know who played it...I remember it was the title track of The Wide World Of Sports here in Australia for many years.

We're Gonna Make You A Star - David Essex

Sky High - Jigsaw

Knock On Wood - Amii Stweart

Eve Of The War (Disco version) - From Jeff Waynes War Of The Worlds

Superman Title Theme (Disco version) - ????? Not sure

There is a fine line between disco and funk, so forgive me if I cross that line.  Here are some of my favorites:

Good Times - Chic
Never Can Say Goodbye - Gloria Gaynor (there is an extended version that's great)
Venus - the Bananarama version (1980's) - definitely disco
Get Down on It - Kool & The Gang
Happy Anniversary - Little River Band (crossover disco/rock)
Keep it Comin' Love - K.C. and the Sunshine Band
Heaven Must be Missing an Angel - Tavares
What'cha Gonna Do - Pablo Cruise
Cut the Cake - Average White Band - definitely funk, but like I said...
Walking in Rhythm - The Blackbyrds

There are many more on my list, many leaning towards the funk side, but maybe that's better left for another thread, unless someone's looking for some more "forgotten" tunes to add to their collection.

I can't choose between Love to Love You Baby, Heart Of Glass, or Funktown.......but i am a huge Blondie fan, so i guess i'll be faithful......

There were so many great songs!  I may have missed it, but did anyone else love "I Feel Love" by Donna Summer?  Also, the naughty "Push, Push, In the Bush"  was a lot of fun.

I picked Stayin' Alive (the top one), Night Fever, and Other.

Other:  Don't Leave Me This Way---Thelma Houston, Who Loves You---Four Seasons, The Love I Lost---Harold Melvin, Rock Your Baby---George McCrae, You Should Be Dancing---Bee Gees, Walking In Rhythm---Blackbirds, Strawberry Letter 22

I like the 70s' disco but I find that the early 80s disco to be somewhat cheesy.
