Subject: What's your favorite '70s tv shows?

Written By: bbigd04 on 02/19/05 at 8:26 pm

I've come to know '70s sitcoms through nick @ nite and tvland, and I really like a lot of them. I pick Sanford, All in the Family, and Three's Company as my favorite.

All in the Family comes first. Then, the early years of the Jeffersons, Maude, and One Day at a Time.

Hello, I'm new to the board. You have some great discussions here so, after lurking a few days, I'm taking the plunge

When I was a kid in the early 70's, I used to love ABC's (at least I think it was ABC) Friday night line-up:  Brady Bunch at 7, Partridge Family at 730, Room 222 at 8, Odd Couple at 830 and Love American Style at 9.

Loved all five shows equally.

Other: WKRP in Cincy

But also...
SNL,
Mary Tyler Moore,
Bob Newhart Show,
Arnie (an obscure show from the early '70s)
Johnny Carson's Tonight Show (I think he was at his best in the late '70s)
The Odd Couple (a good pick by Phylo)
Some of the Rockford Files (the ones where Tom Selleck played Lance White were the best)

Did I miss anything?

My wife used to like Lou Grant, shame the programmes are not repeated.

Fine choice...I needn't remind you that there were only 12 episodes made, but such was the quality of the writing and performance, they still appear fresh...

And, of course, 'Tiswas' (which actually lasted into the early 80s), but a genuine classic (although no-one realised it at the time) whose repercussions still ring loud...not bad for a kid's TV programme...!!

Nanny & The Professor. Now there's an odd television show. I still remember its theme song.

And if you like Juliet Mills you can see quite a bit of her in the movie Avanti! I rented it a couple of years ago. It wasn't a bad movie, but it was obvious that Juliet Mills wanted to shed her clean wholesome image from N&TP.  ;D

Do you remember how special it was when a movie would come out?
Willy Wonka, The Ten Commandments, etc.  You couldn't rent or buy them so it was kinda cool when they would come out on tv.

M*A*S*H but only until about 1977

The Rockford Files

Toma  a short-lived detective show starring Tony Musante- here's a little summary:

ABC had a hit cop show on its hands with "Toma," starring Tony Musante and based on the real-life detective David Toma. When Musante tired of the TV grind, however, the network found itself without a star. Not to worry, however, for popular actor Robert Blake was available. At first the show was to be renamed "Toma Starring Robert Blake," until it was determined that Blake's boisterous image did not match the already established image of David Toma, cop and family man. Hence, the show underwent a major retooling and was reborn as "Baretta."

I never watched Baretta :P

I also liked:

Happy Days
Starsky And Hutch
Three's Company
Soap

http://www.geocities.com/mark21566/no.gifNo way! It started in 1964 and ended in 1967. Definately not a 70's show since it didn't even make it to the 70's!

What didn't I watch in the 70s? I was basically a walking t.v. guide in those days. But now, how I judge a show is if they past the test of time-meaning can I still watch them if they were on today? Here is a list of shows that do past the test of time:

M*A*S*H*
Lou Grant
Emergency
Quincy
WKRP
The Magician (a little obscere show staring Bill Bixby that only lasted a season.)
Courtship of Eddie's Father (started in the 60s -ran until 1972-yes, another Bill Bixby show-I just loved him)
Love American Style (Started in the 60s- ran until 1974)
Laugh In (Started in the 60s - ran until 1973)
Saturday Night Live
Barney Miller (didn't watch it when it was first on but it definately stood the test of time)

I'm sure there are more but that is all I can think of right now.

My brother served him lunch at the Omaha Hilton in 1973 while working his way through dental school at Creighton University! My brother accidently spilled some water on his leg and his agent wanted my brother fired....but Mr. Bixby told the guy to sit down and shut-up. He tipped my brother very nicely :)
