Subject: The Eagles Greatest Hits 1 or 2 ?

Written By: gord on 04/16/05 at 8:51 am

Volume 1 is from 71-75        Volume 2 is from 76-79
-Take It Easy                      -Hotel California
-Witchy Woman                  -Heartache Tonight
-Lyin Eyes                          -Seven Bridges Road
-Already Gone                    -Victim Of Love
-Desperado                        -The Sad Cafe
-One Of These Nights          -Life In The Fast Lane
-Tequila Sunrise                  -I Can't Tell You Why
-Take It To The Limit          -New Kid In Town
-Peaceful Easy Feelin          -The Long Run
-Best Of My Love                -After The Thrill Is Gone

a very impressive 20 songs on 2 albums, a very tough choice but if I had to pick I'd say volume 1 :)

Wow, I seem to be on at just the right time to hit these threads early on!  :D

For me, it's definitely Vol 2 - that's where Joe Walsh joined and helped give the band a harder, more mainstream rock sound, as opposed to the more country pop/rock of the material on Vol 1.

That said, my favorites from V1 are "Already Gone" (probably the only real rocker) and the poppy "Take it Easy" - that's a classic. "Best of my Love" is a nice ballad too, but the other 7 I could take or leave (especially anything from Timothy Schmidt! Sorry, but I never could stand the guy's songs - way too soft rock-y!).

V2 on the other hand is packed with 70's arena rockers (Long Run, Victim of Love, and my favorite - "Life in the Fast Lane" - I so wish MTV had been around in 1976. Imagine what they could've done with this one!). Of course "Hotel California" is the mid-tempo classic here.

I agree, there's some better rockers on 2. I picked 1 over 2 because of 'Heartache Tonight' I can't stand the song, now if it was replaced with 'In The City' I'd pick V2, it's that close for me :)

^ Yeah, I loved "In the City" too - laid back but rocking at the same time. "Disco Strangler" was another cool album track from 'Long Run'.

"Heartache Tonight" is definitely one of their sillier songs, but I still like it. ;D

Volume II - but only because Volume I includes Lyin Eyes (which I thoroughly hate!)

ALL the studio albums. I love all the songs on both greatest hits...but I also love the entire "The Long Run" LP with songs like King Of Hollywood and The Sad Cafe. I like most of the" Hotel California" LP, including Try And Love Again :)

ALL the studio albums.

I'm glad someone picked that option, I've still got a few of the early ones to get but I'm working on it ;)

There are very few Eagles songs that I don't like.  One of my favorites is The sad Cafe also.

Volume 1...I was virtually brought up on that...!!

(Still one of America's biggest selling LP's to this day...)

Since then, there's been another couple of 'GH' that have combined mostly everything onto one CD...that's the one I have now...

I wonder if anyone can confirm this...I've heard there was an edited version of 'Lyin' Eyes' (possibly a radio edit?), which somehow
defeats the object as it's a story song...

There y'go, Janine...you may prefer that...!!

No amount of editing would induce me to listen to it!!  ;D

Good question, gord.

Let's see vol.1 has six that I like

Take It Easy,
Already Gone,
Desperado,
One Of These Nights,
Tequila Sunrise,
Peaceful Easy Feelin

And vol.2 has only two

I Can't Tell You Why,
The Long Run

So it looks like vol.1 wins with me.

Definitely Vol. 1, though I like I Can't Tell You Why from the second.
