Can anybode help me find the name of the artist and song to these lyrics please.

"well I know it's kind of late I hope I didn't wake you. But what I gotta say can't wait, I hope you understand, everytime I try to tell you the words just come out wrong, so I have to say I love you in a song."

I've been told it's a sloppy song from the 70's it would be great if someone could help.
