Subject: Roots (original TV mini-series)

Written By: Banks on 10/12/05 at 5:14 am

Does anyone remember this series???

I bought it a while ago on DVD and it is absolutely amazing!!!

Can anyone tell me if the series got any awards, and if so what were they?

I believe it broke records for a TV audience, and am wondering if anyone can give me the numbers ratings for this series?

Thanks

Here are many of the awards they were nominated for/won

Not too sure about the ratings but I know A LOT of people watched it (including me).  But, part of that had to do with the fact that there were only 4 major networks (ABC, CBS, NBC, and PBS) and maybe a few independent stations (depending on where you lived) so there wasn't too much in the way of choices. But, it was an EXCELLENT program.

I remember watching it back in the mid 70s when it first came out, I've also just recently watched it again with my 15 year old on the Hallmark channel, It's still a pretty powerfuyl program.

Not only powerful, at the time it was regarded as influential, in a positive sense.

In my opinion, it ultimately helped move race relationships forward (and it could only have that impact due to the large numbers who watched it).

There has been some scandal about Alex Haley having fictionalized and/or plagiarized parts of it, but I think it was still a great piece of drama.

In case nobody knew, last week this miniseries was released in a 30th Anniversary Edition.

I was one of the majority of the country, and turned it on during the 2nd or 3rd night.  The popularity of this series was mostly spread by word-of-mouth, and on the following nights the popularity grew enormously.  The ending show was the #1 rated show in history until the "Who Shot J.R." episode of Dallas.  In fact, it blew away the previous record holders (the TV premiere of Gone With The Wind, and the final episode of The Fugitive).  By episode 3, it has a 63% share, and the final part had an amazing 51.1% share (the first time in history that over half of the TV shows in the nation were watching a single broadcast).

I can only hope that sometime in the near future, they get around to releasing a DVD of the follow-up series (Roots: The Next Generation, Roots: The Gift, and Queen).  And if you have never seen this series, I would encourage everybody to either buy or rent it.  It now sits proudly in my DVD collection, alongside the next miniseries that David L. Wolper produced, North & South.
