Subject: The Eagles

Written By: ultraviolet52 on 10/13/05 at 7:19 pm

I just went to my first *and probably last* Eagles concert, which featured Don Henley, Glenn Frey, Timothy B. Smith *I think that's his correct name* and Joe Walsh with excellent back up. I was a bit curious what you all thought of the Eagles. I, of course, knew of all their songs prior to going, so none of it was new to my ears, but it was great to see them in person.

One thing is, I was disheartened that the newspaper I work for pretty much slammed the concert for being contrived. I just don't think the person who wrote the review really doesn't appreciate them on a whole.

What do you guys think about that, as well as your favorite hits by them or your experiences seeing them in person?

*P.S. I made an important addendum which is in bold*

I love The Eagles.  Their 1980 hit I Can't Tell You Why is my favourite.  Of all the Eagles that went solo, Glenn Frey was my favourite, but I also really liked Randy Meisner's 1982 hit Never Been in Love :)

I wouldn't worry too much about what that writer said, you saw a legendary band that may never tour again. I've never seen them but I did see Joe Walsh last summer :)

Same here. I used to like Don Henley's work, but some of it has just grown a bit stale for me in recent years. Glenn Frey's melodies are a little more my style, as well as his vocals. Randy Meisner is great, too *even if he didn't have quite as many hits as the others as a solo artist* Plus, Joe Walsh has had some great solo tunes. I think I like his "In the City" best. "I Can't Tell You Why" is one of the best pop love songs I've ever heard. Hearing them sing it live was great. What impressed me most was how exact their harmony was. They never sang off key or off tone. They were true and tried performers!

Thanks, gord! Maybe I'm a little green when it comes to concert going (I have only been to about 8 or 10 pop/rock concerts), so maybe for the person who wrote the review (who I actually see a few times a week!) just can't appreciate it being that it's his "job." It sort of hurts people's views though. Yet, I won't say he didn't have a kind word to say, as he did, but it all seemed to be hidden underneath some sarcasm. Oh well, you can't please everyone!

Wow, where did you see Joe Walsh? From what I could gather, he's kind of a character. A bit colorful, lol.

Joe played at an outdoor weekend concert here in Ontario, Canada. He headlined the Sat. line-up, he had the DeLeo brothers of Stone Temple Pilots in his band. And yeah he's seems a bit colorful, he'd be fun to have a few beers with :)

Randy Meisner is great, too *even if he didn't have quite as many hits as the others as a solo artist*

Apart from his 3 top 40 hits, Meisner pretty much did session work in the 80's.
In 1989, he re-joined his old band Poco, and was back in the charts with the songs Call it Love and Nothin' to Hide :)

I LOVE the Eagles.

I saw them I guess it was the early 90's, the Hell Freezes Over tour.  Great concert.

I have so many songs that I like...

The Last Resort
In the City
Try and Love Again
Pretty Maids all in a Row
7 Bridges Road
The Long Run

As well as the really popular songs, Take it easy and Hotel California.

Joe Walsh is my favorite!!

I've always been a big fan of the Eagles, I could listen to their 1973 concept album "Desperado" over and over again, I just never tire of that album.

Hotel California is my favorite album-many great songs from it. The title track, New Kid in Town, and Wasted Time are my favs. Couldn't chose between the three of them.

I find Hotel California with its over play on the radio, I am now finding it repetative.

I think the original I can tire a bit more of, but the 1994 "Hell Freezes Over" version is much more fine tuned and I tend to like the "acoustic" sound better.

Great band, both their 70's classic rock heyday and the 80's pop/rock solo careers of Don Henley & Glenn Frey.

This reminded me of the two new songs on that collection, both of which I really liked when they first came out, even if they couldn't be more opposite each other.

"Get Over it" was one of their hardest rockers (kinda reminds me lyrically of Henley's solo work) and ironically sounds, having come out in 1994, more like an 80's song. And "Love Will Keep Us Alive" is another one of those sappy love songs that I tend to like, lol. Very timeless in sound too.

Great list, Whistledog!  I'm going to check out a few of Schmidt's songs, as I don't believe I've heard any of his solo work, although I heard his was fairly successful, as well.

EAGLES and SOLO SINGLES DISCOGRAPHY (Complete with Billboard Chart Peak Positions)

Wow, great list - I'm a massive nitpicker and enthusiast of details, so I love seeing things like the exact order singles were released and their peak positions, etc. :)

The only thing you might've forgotten, that I can think offhand is Glenn Frey's "Partytown" off No Fun Aloud - a rowdy, surf rock-styled song that I actually first heard in Steve Martin's 90's comedy remake movie Sgt Bilko! :D

Maybe it didn't chart, though?

I think Joe Walsh had a last 80's hit/video with "The Confessor" in 1985 or '86 too.

The Eagles rock.  I'll never see Glenn Frey the same way after watching his cheezy acting attempts in the 80s, but their stuff is really classic.

Here's some more trivia about Randy Meisner.  Before joining The Eagles, he was an original member of the band Poco, but left before they became famous.  In 1989, he re-joined Poco on their comeback album Legacy.  The songs "Call it Love" and "Nothin' to Hide" both reached the top 40 :)

Interestingly enough, when Randy Meisner left Poco in 1971, he was replaced by Timothy B. Schmidt.  When Randy Meisner left the Eagles in 1977, he was again replaced by Schmidt
