Subject: NBA championship games in the 70's

Does anyone know, why they used to tape delay the games in the NBA championship? I remember having to wait until about 10:30 at nite to see the games. I would speculate to think that it was probably because it would knock out too much of the primetime line up. We only had 7 channels back then.
