Subject: Soul/Funk Music

Written By: imhowold? on 01/20/06 at 12:04 pm

Does anyone out there remember & love Bill Withers music as much as I do?

Lovely Day
Ain't No Sunshine
Grandma's hands

How about The Commodores?
Sly & The Family Stone?
Parliment?
Sugar Hill Gang?
70's Al Green?
Captain & Tenielle (just kiddin) ;D

Why can't we have some of that good deep soul, hear felt, funk'd da funk music now?

How could you forget "Use Me" (one of his greatest songs and, in one of those great twists of irony, the song that was playing when I lost my virginity???  ;D ;D ;D)

If you're really into late 60's/early 70's soul, I must recommend the Rhino box set "Can You Dig It? The 70's Soul Experience" (originally released in 2001). It has over 140 songs that span the period from 1969 to 1981, although the majority of the songs were originally released between 1970 and 1975. This is one of my favorite genres of music, and the box set is a little expensive (I think it ran me close to $100), but if you love this kind of music as much as I do it's well worth it, and I give it my highest recommendation.

I love this kind of music as well!!!

REAL singers with REAL musicians (as compared to the computerised garbage today) with REAL emotion.

I have a few Bill Withers and Al Green singles plus managed to find a Bill Withers concert from 1975 on DVD (cant recall the name of it now, I think it was in Chicago or somewhere like that). I also have the Use Me and Aint No Sunshine music videos I taped from Aussie TV music show Rage.

Im a HUGE motown fan, especially of their early 70's stuff. Have a number of compilations on CD and vinyl.

But, hey, theres also nothing wrong with the Captain & Tenielle. Recently bought a few of their singles.

Not much of a fan of funk, but there's was some awesome soul music in the first half of the '70s. IMO, the best came from Al Green. The Grass Roots were also good. Some of the songs I like are:

Band Of Gold - Freda Payne
Love Land - Charles Wright and the Watts 103rd St. Rhythm Band
Ooh Child - Five Stairsteps
Tighter, Tighter - Alive And Kicking
Bridge Over Troubled Water - Aretha Franklin
Everybody Plays The Fool - Main Ingredient
I Found Someone Of My Own - Free Movement
Mercy, Mercy Me - Marvin Gaye
Remember Me - Diana Ross
Whatcha See Is Whatcha Get - Dramatics
Betcha By Golly, Wow - Stylistics
Freddie's Dead - Curtis Mayfield
Me And Mrs. Jones - Billy Paul
Too Late To Turn Back Now - Cornelius Brothers and Sister Rose
Ain't No Woman (Like The One I Got) - Four Tops
Brother Louie - Stories (one of my favourites!)
Could It Be I'm Falling In Love - Spinners
Higher Ground - Stevie Wonder
Killing Me Softly - Roberta Flack
Neither One Of Us - Gladys Knight and the Pips
Show And Tell - Al Wilson
Superfly - Curtis Mayfield
Superstition - Stevie Wonder
Touch Me In The Morning - Diana Ross
Be Thankful For What You've Got - William DeVaughn
Just Don't Want To Be Lonely - Main Ingredient
Rock Your Baby - George McCrae
Until You Come Back To Me - Aretha Franklin
You Make Me Feel Brand New - Stylistics

I love the ones I chose from your list (Ive edited it for this post so it only includes the ones I like or know. Below are my favs from the list:

Band Of Gold by Freda Payne, Ooh Child by Five Stair Steps, Killing Me Softly by Roberta Flack, Superstition by Stevie Wonder and Rock Your Baby by Geirge McCrae are the best from that list for me. Although, I wouldnt call Rock Your Baby a funk/soul song. It might be just me though.
