Subject: WMGK in Philly,Top 25 Classic Rock Albums Of All Time.

Written By: loki 13 on 04/01/06 at 9:47 am

The radio station, WMGK, in Philadelphia asked listeners to vote on
their favorite classic rock albums of all time, here is their list with my opinion,
whats yours?

25..The Cars...The Cars  (not in my top 2500)
24..Damn The Torpedos...Tom Petty  (top 25? , I doubt it)
23..Breakfast In America...SuperTramp  (maybe top 250)
22..Bad Co...Bad Company  (not here, top 50)
21..Exile On Main Street..Rolling Stones  (I thought it would be higher)
20..Rubber Soul..Beatles  (can't argue this one)
19..Led Zeppelin II...Led Zeppelin  (again, I can't argue)
18..A Night At The Opera...Queen  (not this album, not at this spot)
17..Frampton Comes Alive...Peter Frampton  (more popular than good)
16..Boston...Boston  (top 100, maybe, not top 20)
15..Blonde On Blonde...Bob Dylan  (top 50, This placed a little high)
14..Goodbye Yellow Brick Road...Elton John  (I'm OK with this)
13..Led Zeppelin IV...Led Zeppelin  (this isn't a surprise)
12..The Wall...Pink Floyd  (I thought this would make top 10)
11..The Doors...the Doors  (no surprise)
10..Sticky Fingers...Rolling Stones  (figured top 10)
9..Ziggy Stardust and The Spiders From Mars...David Bowie  (huh? who voted this here?)
8..Hotel California..The Eagles  (again, more popular than good)
7..Physical Graffitti..Led Zeppelin  (no arguements)
6..Rumors..Fleetwood Mac  (doesn't make my list but it was popular)
5..Abbey Road...The Beatles  (no problem at all with this one)
4..Who's Next...the Who  (see above comment)
3..Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Heart's Club Band..The Beatles        (that's three right)
2..Born To Run...Bruce Springsteen  (is this some kind of joke?)
1..Dark Side Of The Moon..Pink floyd  (did anyone have a doubt about this?)

That is the top 25 of all time? The Cars debut album is better than anything by ELP,
Yes, Jethro Tull or Led Zeppelin's first album? I think not!

I Don't know how Damn the Torpedos and Ziggy Stardust made that list.  There are far better classic rock albums than those

I am surprised no ELO albums made the list

A station in Toronto Q107 did a similar list, having fans vote on the top 107 albums of all time, I tried to find it on their website to compare the top 25 to this one but it's gone. I can remember dark side was #1. I'm suprised at 'Breakfast In America' and no 'Crime Of The Century'.

I'm a bit iffy about this whole list. I see some that should've been higher.

I found the Q107 list.  They list the top 10 in order, then they compiled the complete list alphabetically ...

#1 - Pink Floyd - Dark Side Of The Moon
#2 - Led Zeppelin IV
#3 - The Beatles - Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band
#4 - AC/DC - Back In Black
#5 - Pink Floyd - The Wall
#6 - Jimi Hendrix - Are You Experienced?
#7 - The Beatles - The Beatles (White Album)
#8 - The Eagles - Hotel California
#9 - Led Zeppelin II
#10 - U2 - The Joshua Tree

AC/DC - Highway To Hell
AC/DC - Back In Black
AC/DC - Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap
AEROSMITH - Toys In The Attic
THE ALLMAN BROTHERS BAND - At Fillmore East
BAD COMPANY - Bad Company
THE BAND - The Band
THE BEACH BOYS - Pet Sounds
THE BEATLES - Rubber

at least this list ^ is a little more believable but there are still a few
that make you scratch your head about.Yes..90125? not on my list.
Still no ELP. "Welcome Back My Friends To The Show That Never Ends
Ladies And Gentlemen.Emerson Lake & Palmer" belongs on a best album list.

I usually don't take heed to those kind of lists. Who cares what a bunch of 'music experts' tell you?

I think from a strictly 'rock' context, the top 10 should include (in no particular order): Jimi Hendrix Experience - Electric Ladyland, Beatles - White Album, Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin IV, Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon, Black Sabbath - Paranoid, Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin II, The Doors - The Doors, The Doors - Strange Days, Pink Floyd - Piper at the Gates of Dawn.etc.etc.

these aren't from 'music experts' but from listeners of the radio station voting on their favorite albums, I think it's interesting to see how differant cities compare.

Since I haven't heard ALL the best classic rock albums of all time, I can hardly judge this list!  ::)  I'd certainly agree with many that were on this list, like Boston, Led Zeppelin IV, Rubber Soul, Rumors, Hotel California, to name a few...

Here's a few I'd add to that original list that seem to be true classics:

Steely Dan - Aja
Van Morrison - Moondance
Revolver - Beatles

:)

Oh I, see. I would be interested in seeing the list for L.A. I'd be very disheartened if 'The Doors' and 'Pet Sounds' are not near the top of that list.
