Sweet Home Alabama.  Freebird has become the Southern Rock equivalent of Stairway to Heaven; good song, severly overhyped.

Cmt just had a show on the top 20 southern rockers. Sweet Home Alabama was 1. Ramblin Man was 2. then Freebird was 3..
Now everytime I logged into their site the part where you vote was always down so I want to know how they did this vote.  Cause I am pretty sure when vh1 did this Freebird was number 1...

The only one I've heard is 'Sweet Home', which I think it is a bit overrated.

Sweet Home Alabama really became a symbol cause Neil Young put southern men down in one of his songs. So LS took it apon themselves to respond.

Saturday Night Special might be more socially-relevant, Sweet Home Alabama might be of more cultural significance, but it's Free Bird for me, too.

There is only one true version of Free Bird, and it is was recorded live, it starts with an entire stadium screaming "Free Bird", it is more than 14 minutes long, and its "conventional rock song ending" lasts seven minutes.

I'm a young 'un.  Still remember the first time I heard it on the radio.  Still remember my jaw dropping after the first couple of minutes.  Still remember it hitting the floor as the guitars kept getting more intense.  Still remember having to tear up the floorboards and peel my jaw of the concrete in the basement by the time it was through.

So, at the risk of sounding like a cliche'...

"YO!  FREE BIRD!"

I said "Gimme Three Steps" only because it's got some specific memories attached to it.  Sweet Home Alabama pretty much ties for the same reasons.  Freebird -- well, yeah -- but I just heard it way too many times.

Sweet Home Alabama

I liked Free Bird, but I enjoyed it more when Will to Power covered it with Peter Frampton's "Baby, I Love Your Way" in 1988 8)

If you listen to the lyrics of Southern Man by Neil Young, you'll hear he's talking about souther plantation owners. Besides that Neil Young and Ronnie Van Zant were good friends and Van Zant would occasionally wear Neil Young t-shirts at Skynyrd concerts and vice versa with Neil Young.

And I can't give a direct answer to my favourite Skynyrd song of the 70s, but I'd say it's a tie between Free Bird, Tuesday's Gone and Saturday Night Special. I've heard Sweet Home Alabama WAY too many times.

Definitely FreeBird for me.

I find Sweet home alabama is overplayed over here.

I still like it though.

Sweet Home Alabama is the only one of these that I know well, so I'll go with that one for now.
