Subject: Too much sex in movies in the seventies--what do you think?

Written By: star500 on 08/15/06 at 11:43 am

I am only 21 so I would fall under the "I wasn't around then" category but my mom told me there was a lot of sex in movies in the 70's, particularily horror movies. She told me almost every horror movie had sex in it back then but the worst were the vampire movies. I am not sure if all movies had a lot of sex in them or if it was just the horror movies. I know Last Tango in Paris came out then and that wasn't a horror movie but it sure had a lot of sex in it, which is why I didn't restrict the poll to just horror movies.

I'll say a qualified yes.  Qualified because, if you rank movie watchers on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being someone who sees all the movies), I'd be about a 1 1/2.  ;D  That being said, I think this is something that changed a lot during the course of the decade.  Comparing a typical 1969 movie vs. a 1979 movie in terms of the suggestive content or nudity, you'd think you were on a different planet!

If my memory serves me right, it was during the early 70's that the MPAA rating system came into widespread use, and at the time, it was much needed.  :-\\

It wasn't comparable to the 80s and 90s. Every horror film didn't include sex or nudity, though some did.

I voted Yes there is

I ALWAYS saw some sort of sex act going on in a movie, that wasn't meant for my eyes. My parents used to think I had fallen asleep at the drive-ins. ;D

Yes, the 70s in general were very raunchy, but the edginess of the decade is honestly part of why I like it so much. I mean, the 70s was a decade when heavy metal and punk were ACTUALLY popular.
So yes, lots of sex, but instead of bothering me, it's actually a positive for me. I dislike the moral preachiness of prior decades and the boundary-pushing nature of 70s media makes it my third favorite decade for pop culture, with the 90s in first and the 00s in second.

I was there, and yes there was!

...and there is no option for 'I was there'!

You seem to be confusing a few different things here. YES, there was an openness about sex, starting in the 60s and blossoming in the 70s, that hadn't been seen in cinema before. But when the movies were good, they were good. It is not for nothing that with the advent of "New Hollywood", the 70s are considered the greatest decade in filmmaking. Read about it here:

New Hollywood
Why The 70's Were The Greatest Decade In America Cinema
https://medium.com/@jtesterkamp/new-hollywood-why-the-70s-were-the-greatest-decade-in-america-cinema-c42676e2170f

HOWEVER, the horror and vampire movies you are speaking of are a very specific genre of B-movies known as 'sexploitation". There were millions of these in the 70s. Believe me, nobody confused them with high art, and they were a mainstay of drive-ins during the declining era of drive-ins when such cheesy fare was their bread and butter. Another genre of this nature was "blaxploitation". Again, low budget. One of the most successful blaxploitation films was 1971's "Shaft" with a soundtrack by Isaac Hayes, and "Superfly" with a soundtrack by Cutis Mayfield. Sometimes blaxploitation and horror sexploitation merged, such as in 1972's "Blacula".

Hope this clears things up a little. There really isn't a way to treat all 70s film as one thing and just say "there was a lot of sex" in a blanket way. There were genres of things.

Accurate. But I'm not sure if "raunchy" is the correct word. That makes it sound like things were cheap and just plain dirty. OPEN is the word I would use. Yes, this could degenerate into raunchiness. people are only human and there are always those out to make a buck. But, it was more of, as you say, an expansion of boundaries. Pornographic films such as  "Deep Throat" rose up from the underground and were actually shown at mainstream movie theaters. Husbands and wives would go to see it as a night out. For better or worse, they felt sophisticated for doing such things. A very, very open time.

Just a note about the poll. The option "I wasn't around then" appears twice.

I think that is because the poll is VERY old (2006). Sometimes old polls mess up.

Back in the 1970s, before attending Film School (which events stopped my from starting), a group of us went to see "Deep Throat" for research purposes.

I think it was the decade of raunchiness, if you're revering to porn in films, then there was a lot of sex, people rarely used condoms and the AIDS or any other virus wasn't around at the time, porn was just about everywhere in New York, you had strip clubs, peep shows and porn shops where they sold a variety of X-rated material, I think there was a lot of sex in films in The 70's but I think in the 1980's we watched a lot of teen sex comedies.

Also, Y2K era had lots of sex comedies like American Pie and Road Trip, plus the rise of internet porn.
And sex comedies really got big thanks to Animal House in 1978, which was followed by films like Porky's in 1981.

There was a lot of male/female nudity In The 1970's but I think In The 1980's, you only saw the female form in which guys ogled over and with films such as Revenge Of The Nerds, Porky's, Weird Science and Just One Of The Guys, those types of films made money at the box office.

I think in The 1970's there was sex everywhere you went whether it be sex shops, peep shows and movie theaters.
