Subject: Underappreciated Band of the 70s: Goose Creek Symphony

Written By: deadrockstar on 01/05/07 at 2:28 am

If you were a hippie-type in the 70s in the South, you probably remember them. Their music was somewhere between alternative country, progressive bluegrass and rock n' roll. They're pretty obscure so I'll be surprised if anyone here knows them. I don't think they ever had any top 40 hits, lol.

Heres a sample of lyrics from three of their songs...

Welcome To Goose Creek

Woke up this mornin'
With nothin' on my mind
Nothin's all I'm a lookin' for
Nothin's all I'll find
And I've been happy here for now on forty years
Here I have noone to hate, I have noone to fear
Its just a way of life so easy to find
But it won't be on maps they make
And you can't buy it on time

If you find that city life is not the life for you
If you're wantin' somethin' old and tired of somethin' new
Come out to the country when the trees are all in bloom
Cleanse your mind, cleanse your soul and give your head some room

And you're welcome to Goose Creek won't you come?
The boys would like to invite everyone
We'll take ya there its not so far away
If you'll just sit back and listen to us play(Play!)

Do ba do da loo, do do do(x8)

Welcome to Goose Creek won't you come?
The boys would like to invite everyone
We'll take ya there with us we're on our way
Pack your bags incase you wanna stay

Rush On Love

Sittin' here, thinkin' about you dear
And I got a rush on looooove

Some call it a dope deal,
All people call it rough
I don't think I'll freak out no more,
I've tried enough of that stuff
Some people tried it one time,
The second times high or low
The third time it will make you weep,
the fourth will make you smoke

Sittin' here, thinkin' about ya dear,
And I got a rush on loooooove

Don't shoot up blind allies
Theres a heart to hold you near
And if you don't play games with it,
theres nothin' you should fear
Just get up in the mornin',
and wait for the night to come
Cause everything thats in between,
was put there just for fun

Sittin' here, thinkin' about ya dear,
And I got a rush on loooooove

Sittin' here, thinkin' about ya dear,
And I got a rush on loooooove(haha!)

Pounds and pounds and ounces,
and love comes in a box
Love comes to me anytime,
that I can find my rocks
It will make you happy,
if the work don't make ya broke
But I love you so dog gone much,
its drivin' me to smoke(salmon)

Sittin' here, thinkin' about ya dear,
And I got a rush on, got a rush on, got a rush on-

I got a rush on-

Got a rush on...

The Corn Won't Grow, So Rock N' Roll

How do you? Come on in old friend
You know you're welcome any time
Sit right down and we'll have a talk
And you can tell me whats on your mind

People are talkin' about our problems,
some people talk but they don't know
What'll they do when there really is a problem?
20 years from now when the corn won't grow

Well if I were you I wouldn't worry,
about the things that we can't see
And don't go buyin' noone's answers,
if your question was for free

Ol' Uncle Ott now he once told us,
never sleep alone through the cold winter night
Get you a wife and have a family,
you'll be warm for the rest of your life

Sometimes I just sit and wonder,
why in the world can't the world get along?
All we need is love & understanding,
man can't live on cornbread alone

We're all here just to have a lotta fun,
Fred'll play the fiddle now that we've begun

We'll join in now least we'll try,
but sometimes it helps if we're a little bit high
Hiiiiiiiiiiiigh...Hiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh

Do ba do da loo, do do do(x12)

Do do...Do do...

Do do...Do do...

Do do do do.... Do do....

Last weekend on WDRV, they played Goose Creek Symphony's version of "Mercedes Benz".  It sounded like a good version.

To be honest, I don't really know their other music...  :-\\

i had two of their albums when i was much younger.

i recall liking the song "Words Of Earnest" quite a bit.

in fact, I just might have to go dig that out of the closet this weekend.

thanks for the memory nudge.
