Subject: Best Year of Music in the 70's?

Written By: xSiouXBoIx on 08/18/07 at 12:11 pm

I think 1977 was. So many great new wave and punk albums were released that year. Sex Pistols, The Clash, Blondie, and Talking Heads all came out with their Debuts. Iggy Pop and David Bowie released two albums each. Some of the best disco albums were also released, including Donna Summer's Once Upon A Time and Giorgio Moroder's landmark From Here To Eternity. Rumours by Fleetwood Mac also came out.

1978 and 1979 follow closely behind. MANY great punk and new wave albums came out from '77-'79.

Each year of the 70s has fond favourite songs for me, and at the moment I cannot place one particular year.

It was hard to pick one certain year cause to me, the 70's were the best decade for music. I chose 1975 cause that was the year alot of great music came out that I remember fondly. Close behind it was 1974. Even if alot of the music is considered cheesy today, it sure was great to listen to  :)

From an "album" perspective, I was torn between two years - 1973 and 1977.

1973...
Pink Floyd - Dark Side of The Moon
Elton John - Goodbye Yellow Brick Road
Roxy Music - For Your Pleasure (while Brian Eno was still in group)
Wings - Band On the Run
Led Zepplin - Houses of the Holy
The Who - Quadrophenia
Black Sabbath - Sabbath Bloody Sabbath
Genesis - Selling England by the Pound
Stevie Wonder - Innervisions

1977.....
The Clash - The Clash
Se.x Pistols - Never Mind the Bollocks
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours
Billy Joel - The Stranger
Steely Dan - Aja
Jackson Browne - Running On Empty
Talking Heads - Talking Heads '77
Saturday Night Fever Soundtrack

Hmmm. I would say 1973 from an "album" perspective.  From a "hit singles" perspective, including the many one-hit-wonders of the 70's, i would probably say 1977.  There was more diversity - punk, disco, reggae, rock, etc.

Damn...This is a HARD one to choose just one year from!!!

I love every year of the 1970's in terms of music. Every year has a brilliant song or fifty that are in my favourite list.

Id pick 1979, cause then Id have all those songs from that year, AND every other year thats passed.

But...If I had to choose purely based upon the music released in a single year...1977...For all the reasons stated previously, and include Rumors by Fleetwood Mac.

Well, I looked into the Billboard and Cash Box year-end charts of the '70s, and for me the best year was '72, followed by '76. They each had the most number of songs that I liked a lot.

ahem.

"live and let live," man.

ahem!

kodachrome is a great tune, yes.

and i believe fragile by yes came out that year, which is among the greatest albums of human history. i think j.s. bach himself would have been happy to sit down at a clavichord and lay down a few tracks for "fragile."

Back when it was ok to download using Napster I printed the BillBoard Top 100 songs of each year of the 70's and downloaded them all from 1970-79. I have to say I listen to them all about the same. I like 1973 as that was the year that Bad Company debuted. Also 1975 as this was the year of my first love and 1977 for Frampton Comes Alive. Each year has its own great songs and artists to offer and I listen to them often.

I chose 1975, although the years 1977 and 1978 were great, too. But, to be honest mostly every year in the '70s were great. Even the early '80s (since a lot of songs still had a '70s sound to them) were great songs.
