Subject: The 30 Years Ago Thread

Written By: nally on 10/01/07 at 2:44 pm

Since there's a "10 years ago" thread in the 1990's section, a "20 years ago" thread in the 1980's section, and a "40 years ago" thread in the pre-1970's section, I figured I'd start an appropriate thread for this area...even though I wasn't around in '77.

So for those of you who were alive 30 years ago, what do you remember?

Like I said, I wasn't around then, but I do know, from looking at pictures, that my parents were living in their second apartment; they had just gotten their first dog, and they celebrated their 1st anniversary in October. Also, I have some friends who were born 30 years ago. :)

My most vivid memory of that year was HM's Silver Jubilee celebrations that summer...

So in honour, everyone got the day off and had a street party, which would have been great if the weather had been not unlike a day in February...it was freezing!

Seems Liz has a thing for having 'celebrations' in averse weather...when she was crowned in June 1953, it rained all day!

That was the year that my family (and a couple of friends) took a boat to the island of Palau and camped out in a cave on one of the rock islands for two weeks...

My folks were really into scuba diving then, and Palau was supposed to be one of the best locations in the world for that...

(Being only 11 years old at the time, I just snorkeled on the surface of the ocean while everybody else was down below... :D)

I also vividly remember hearing about Elvis Presley's death...and though I wasn't really a fan, I knew that he'd had a huge impact on the music industry and that his loss was greatly felt all around the world...

I was 11 years old and in '77 our family took a road trip to San Francisco. We stayed in a few motels along the way and that's when we turned on the TV to hear that Elvis had died. I really didn't think too much of it at the time because I was a big fan of Fleetwood Mac's Rumours album (like everyone else) and thought Elvis was for old folks.

I remember my brothers each got a skateboard on that trip too!
I remember throwing a vinyl & fabric outdoor lawn furniture cushion into a pool at one of the motels we stayed at thinking it would float but it sunk right to the bottom and it was way to heavy to get it back out so I left it at the bottom of the pool without telling anyone! ;D

I was 5 in 1977 and I remember my first day at school...

Though my biggest memory was the whole Star Wars craze...It was released in May 1977 in the USA and didnt make it to Australia until November the same year...I saw it at a local drive-in theater and absolutely loved it!!!

I remember having a huge crush on Stevie Nicks from Fleetwood Mac and loving the Rumours album...I also remember my excitement at discovering we also already had the Fleetwood Mac-Fleetwood Mac album (the first one to feature Buckingham and Nicks). I also remember my Mum finding a rare pressing of the Buckingham/Nicks album at a local market and I begged her to buy it, which she did.

I also remember running around the streets around my house and my school which was over the back of my home until the streetlights came on...and sometimes, in Summer, being allowed out after dark to play spotlight.

That same year my Mum took my babysitters grandaughter and myseld to Nelson Bay for a week's holiday. margaret cried because she was homesick for a day or two, but we ended up making other friends and swimming a lot.

I remember spending days at the beach, getting burnt and turning brown (these days that is a stu[id thing to do around here due to skin cancer and knowing how it occurs). I also remember playing with my action figures in the bathtub.

I graduated High School in 1977.  I also started college in 1977.

So I guess that's something to remember!  I didn't work that summer - I may have made a feeble attempt but don't recall.  I got contact lenses (conventional hard ones) for the first time and had a dreadful time getting used to them (thank goodness I finally did) - don't know why I remember that.  I was excited about going away to college, and remember going to orientation and that sort of thing.  I remember spending many a day that summer going to the park and skateboarding the afternoon away (I loved skateboarding then).  Despite having no money, I did lots of shopping (a teenage girl - c'mon what did you expect ::) .)  And lots of listening to the radio and watching TV.  That summer was a bit of a blur, but I do remember it.

Of course I went away to college that September and everything changed...  :D

i have really clear movies of star wars coming out that year, and the lines around the block and stories in the paper about it. (may 25 is the day, but who's counting?) the fancy theater in houston was the "alabama" but i actually specifically remember pestering my mom in a mall restaurant somewhere (yes! malls had been invented! >:() to let me go see star wars again at the mall theater and she, seemingly begrudgingly agreeing to let me see it for the 10th or 12th time. (to be fair, this could have been 1978 or even 79; the movie ran for at least two years, i'm pretty sure...) i'm sure in reality she was glad to be rid of me... :P

I have a clip of Bowie and Crosby performing that piece somewhere on VHS. I dont have the entire special though. I do think the specials were available on DVD here in Australia a few years back. Crosby used to do them in the mid 1970’s, until his death, and the 1977 one was, obviously, his last.

This blizzard hit the Philadelphia area on February 5th, I remember it well. It was a Sunday night, Emerson Lake & Palmer
were playing at the Spectrum. Sometime during the concert the first flakes started to fall, by the time I left the Spectrum
about an 1 1/2 of snow was on the ground. When it was over about 20+ inches fell in the area giving me three straight
days off from school. The Philadelphia area was not prepared for such a snowfall, it crippled the area. This was the last
time I enjoyed snow. Now That I have to work, I hope it never snows again.

I was about 13 in 1979, living in Miami, and just got into junior high.  I remember my Gloria Vanderbilt cotton white thin material "jeans", they fit great and cost $40 at Jordan Marsh!  I can't believe it since , 30 years later, Gloria Vanderbilt jeans and pants cost me about $20..  Although they aren't the same as they were back then.
The jogging craze was just inits infancy, and the only place to get real "padded" running shoes was at Runner's  -----, I forgot the name.  But back then, a padded running shoe just meant that there was a half inch of padding on the heal instead of none, and they were beginning to make the tops out of lightweight nylon material.

Going to the rollerskating rink was  "big " for preteens back then.  It was the cool thing to do.

Of course, for girls,  straight long hair made you the most popular, probably still true in today's pre teen world .

I had just moved out of my parents house, and lived in Ocean Grove N.J. during this blizzard. I worked in a nursing home and got called in because I was one of the few people within walking distance. What a trip.. I mean I had just taken a hit of acid too. My roommate and I both worked there, thank God we didn't have very responsible jobs. Still it was an unforgettable experience. going outside and everything was white what a rush.AHHHH to be 21 again.

Hmmm, in the summer of '79 I had a really bad job.  A government job - social security administration.  I hated it.  :P

Actually it was a good job, since jobs were hard to come by then for pre-college-grads like me, especially above minimum wage, and it took me forever to get anything.  Not to mention, my dear old aunt (who worked there) helped me out.  ::)

It did help lead to better things, though!  :)

His 1985 Reckless album is probably still my favorite CDN album ever.

I have a friend who was born that day; his first name is the same as mine. We met when we were freshmen in high school (half our lives ago!) and were good friends. Recently I have reconnected with him on Facebook.
