did you guys ever see this?

http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2005/11/13/AR2005111301291.html

i do see a lot of kids wearing led zeppelin shirts still, and kids on youtube doing note-for-note versions of david gilmour solos and stuff. a part of me thinks, wow, good taste with the youngsters, and another part of me thinks, wow, i bet they get made fun of a lot. ;D

still, even when i was in high school led zeppelin was already pretty old but we still liked it. it went well with getting s**tfaced drunk cuz it's all mopey and stuff.

"'Hey Jude'? Duude.
The Top 40 Are Over 40 for Teens With a Taste for Old-School Rock

By J. Freedom du Lac
Washington Post Staff Writer
Monday, November 14, 2005; Page C01

David Zeke -- inquisitive, artistic, analytical and vastly smarter than your average high school senior -- is failing to find the irony here. So he adores the aged song that's exploding from the speakers connected to his desktop computer. So what?

"It's just really good music," the 17-year-old from Vienna says with a shrug. This, as the snarling vocals come barreling out of the time-warp machine: "I'm not trying to cause a b-big s-s-sensation (Talkin' 'bout my generation)/I'm just talkin' 'bout my g-g-generation (Talkin' 'bout my generation)!"

Jethro Tull's Ian Anderson visits with Thomas Jefferson High's classic-rock club, including David Zeke, left, John Sigman and Tom Smilack. (Tracy A. Woodward -- The Washington Post)

It's the Who's landmark youth anthem "My Generation," recorded 40 years ago for a generation that has since turned gray, with adultly concerns and everything else that the song's author, Pete Townshend, seemed to fear when he made that famous 1965 declaration, "Hope I die before I get old."

Townshend was in his mid-forties when Zeke was born. The song itself already had reached the legal drinking age."

Paranoid is great.  In the Uk at least it sort of crossed music boundaries in that several punk/goth bands would do this as an encore to a concert.  The first version I can recall hearing was by The Damned.

that's good too. even people that hate the eagles like that one.

Subject: Re: sweetest classic rock tunes

i'm not a big eagles fan, which is funny because i'm a big joe walsh fan. i like hotel california -- i mean come on, those guitar solos at the end just never get old -- and LITFL, and a couple of others, but for the most part they were just kinda generic for my tastes. sorta bad company-ish. i mean they were very different from bad company but the simplicity of the music was similar.

excellent production though.

there are a couple of good More Than A Feeling vids out there  :)

and good call with Billy Preston.  I'm gonna add one of Billy to your list and a very young Clapton is also in this one, along with a whole bunch of others including Badfinger, but they are off to the right out of the camera shot. It's from George Harrison's "The Concert For Bangladesh" and Billy's performance kicked the benefit concert energy up a couple of notches. and check out Billy's glory dance towards the end, he gets up from the keyboard and gets down.  8)

What would you say classic rock is? Like maybe between the British Invasion and MTV (1964 to 1980/81ish) and anything that's mainstream but generally rocking.

Anyway, I know I'm not gonna get much praise for this, but even though there's some undeniable classics, it's really overrated. There's some individual songs I like (usually the poppier ones), but as a whole it bores me over time. I mean, how many times can you hear the same Skynyrd and Led Zeppelin songs before you just wanna rip your hair out? It's nice to change it up a bit and hear something other than just a guitar for five minutes!

That said, here's a few favorites:

Breakdown - Tom Petty
Do it Again - Steely Dan
Heart of Gold - Neil Young
All Along the Watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
I'll Supply the Love - Toto ("Hold the Line" is overrated, and their best stuff was '80s)
later Beatles, especially anything from Part 1 of the White Album
Double Vision - Foreigner
The Long Run - Eagles (Henley's solo stuff beats the heck out of them, though)
Say You'll Love Me - Fleetwood Mac
early Rolling Stones (i.e. Paint it Black, Gimmie Shelter, Let's Spend the Night Together)
Born to Run - Bruce Springsteen
Down on the Corner - Creedence Clearwater
Baby I Love Your Way - Peter Frampton
Listen to the Music - Doobie Brothers

^Right on, thanks. :)

I never understood why some of them bore me, but others I love to death. I guess I like anything that's poppier and catchy....but considering I'm a Paula Abdul fan, I probably have pretty broad tastes. ;D

Some of those songs are before my time, but like stuff from the late '70s was still common enough on the radio when I was really young, so I did kinda grow up with it. Plus, my dad likes some of the lighter classic rock as well.

The best Heart song is "These Dreams" - that's one of a gazillion that I remember hearing on the radio when I was really young. I remember because of where we lived at the time, it was like early 1986.

I also love "Alone" and "All I Wanna Do is Make Love To You" too, just clean cut and catchy '80s pop/rock ballads.

Rick is probably all sobered up from the partying scene and can focus on the music, although in the 70's he just flat out kicked ass.  if you don't have Edgar Winter's White Trash *Roadwork* album, I highly recommend it. Rick is on fire

How about some of the standards from the "Southern Rock" explosion in the '70s?

Pure Prairie League - Amie No actual video for that one, but still a great song.

Elvin Bishop - Fooled Around And Fell In Love Once again no video, but still a great song.

Gimme Three Steps - Lynard Skynard Very under appreciated song by Skynard.

Heard It Love Song - Marshall Tucker Band Great tune from the late '70s.

A few others that I like:

Feel Like Making Love - Bad Company

Running On Empty - Jackson Browne

Awesome thread. A lot of great songs listed so far ;)

aaaaaah. barracuda was just some balls-on guitar playing.  8) it was really simple but it had good tone and attitude and it was one of the songs that started me wanting to play guitar when i was a little kid. "smoke on the water" was similar, it was just so straight-ahead and so playing with great guitar tone that it made me say, i have to learn how to play this thing because that sound is SO good. and that's a big part of why that song is so made fun of now, because it's so good. lol. barracuda is similar, it's just so rockin'.  :D

ha! we did talk about heart, remember?  :P even it up is a great tune, i'd totally forgotten about it. it's sorta funkier than most of their stuff, they always seemed to either be doing tough-chick hard rock or lovey ballads, they didn't do enough stuff down the middle like that.

i have that one song of theirs i like better than all others but i can never remember what it's called cuz i just remember the guitar stuff and i know it's about show your love or hide your love or something and then immediately i think about "you've got to hide your love away" by the beatles and that becomes this brain booger and i can't think of it after that. maybe i should drink more.

ah! it's funny that neither the beatles nor the stones have come up on this thread, that i can think of.

ah! i love the guess who! although this is my song by them.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IJbFVJvRqOQ

sorry to get all studio again, but i just really like the studio of this one. it seems slightly lesser known by them, it was still a big hit in the day but less remembered over the years and i loved it, i only had a recording off the radio and i listened to it over and over again. 8)

this is the song that introduced me to the wonders of marijuana. (although the studio version i mean, not the bootleg.... the bootleg is just more interesting.)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9s0g7nzntDs

something about that crescendo when there's that lush guitar chord and the band kicks in, it's always been the perfect musical metaphor for when you have that period after you toke up, and you wonder how strong it's gonna be, and then that wave washes over you and you realize it's gonna be  8) strong.

You all try "A Momentary Lapse of Reason"  .... CD by Pink Floyd

Subject: Re: sweetest classic rock tunes

Written By: Tia on 05/03/08 at 10:56 pm

ha! i saw floyd back in the 80s and i believe the momentary lapse of reason tour was the one i saw.  8) probably of the post-roger waters phase that's my favorite album by them. david gilmour is a rare talent.

so... here's something. try not to knock over any furniture. stay in your seats for the duration of this ride.

i'm tellin' ya, that early 70s stuff, after the invention of the marshall stack but before the invention of the stage monitor, that was pure rock.

at the risk of spamming my own thread, i'm struck by how people talk about these bands still playing like it's a bit of a joke, but this is dead on. particularly the vocals, which i find are the first thing a live rock band tends to screw up. and these guys are all... let's face it, elderly.

ah i like em when they're doing their old foagie thing. he's not so pretty but he's spankin' that guitar like a squealin' hog. he's got this fast clean style on the guitar he didn't have in his younger days. he sounds like a jazzer, it's mad chops you only get from experience.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o2HqN4cxObE

that's an awesome telecaster. too. i always wanted a top of the line tele.

aw hell with it. i was shopping around for some live yes that was halfway decent but let's face it -- their instruments were always dead on but their ensemble vocals could not fail to suck live.

and therefore, i invite you to drop a half hit of goonie bird, wait 45 minutes, and watch the following.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J2hFZ8KnsSo

definitely one of my top, probably, three songs of any kind of all time. a work of true beauty. and it's got mad guitar chops! you just kinda have to... wait for them.  :P

and that's some dead on ensemble vocals. 8)

It's a great song from a great album. It's a song from Steve Hackett's debut solo album "Please Don't Touch."
The album also features the likes of Richie Havens, Steve Walsh and Phil Ehart.
