Subject: If you had to choose just one classic rock album?

Written By: loki 13 on 07/21/08 at 4:02 pm

Philadelphia's Classic Rock Station, WMGK, is holding an event on 8/8/08. On Aug. 8th the station will play
the top 8 classic rock albums back to back without commercial interuptions. How will they come up with
the top 8 albums? Listeners go to their website and vote for their best album, the top 8 vote getters get
the nod. Here's the kicker, when you go to vote you can only choose 1 album.

So I ask, if you had to choose 1 Classic Rock album to be played, which would it be?

For the record, I picked Blind Faith but chances of that getting played are slim to none.

Tough, very tough. I would say it is a toss-up between Styx's Pieces of Eight or Jethro Tull's Songs From the Wood.

i think i'd have to pick pink floyd's meddle, although its being the best album of all time, i've listened to it so many times i'm thoroughly sick of it.

April Wine - Stand Back (1975)
To me, this was their best album in the 70s, and it certainly holds it's place amongst the greatest rock albums in the 70s

This has gotta be one of the toughest assignments, choosing 1 album. I narrowed it down to three albums:

I love  Toys In The Attic - Aerosmith  http://www.whodoesthatsong.com/albumcovers/Toys%20In%20The%20Attic.jpeg

and I dig Boston - Boston  http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/en/2/23/BostonBoston.jpg

but when it comes down to it, well, it's an easy choice. if I could only pick one, it'd have to be Led Zeppelin IV  http://rds.yahoo.com/_ylt=A9G_bDqWfoVIWMYAS9SjzbkF/SIG=14dipc8u4/EXP=1216794646/**http%3A//www.mc.clintock.com/first_floor/living_room/sun_porch/cabinet_built-in/audio_cds/ICON-images/led_zeppelin_-_iv.jpg

I considered Toys in the Attic but I think 'Aerosmith' is overall a superior album.

Mine would actually be from the 60's....LOVE  Forever Changes.  One of the truley great rock albums of all time, but if you want one from the 70's i think led Zeppelin IV is the choice

----------------
Now playing: Love - AndMoreAgain
via FoxyTunes.

I've got the first album, and it's good, but when it released, Dream On was the only song that got any air play so I wasn't esposed to the rest and now that i've listened to that record many times, I'd much rather listen to TITA. When Toys released, they played everything on it, but of course Sweet Emotion, Big Ten Inch, and Walk This Way got tons of radio time.  it was a great party album, every song a keeper from beginning to end.
but hey, it's still Aerosmith, America's greatest Rock & Roll band and that's what really counts.

good choices so far. Coming up with just one album is a very tough thing to do. I chose Blind Faith, not
because it is my favorite album but because it is a great album that other people would also enjoy. Another
criteria I used in choosing is the fact that once you put the album on it stays on until it's over, no song skipping.

I know this radio station well, I can pretty much tell you what time of day it is by what song they are playing.
These are the 8 albums I think will be chosen.

8...Damn The Torpedoes.....Tom Petty
7...Goodbye Yellow Brick Road....Elton John
6...Hotel California....The Eagles
5...Born To Run....Bruce Springsteen
4...Sticky Fingers....Rolling Stones
3...Dark Side Of The Moon....Pink Floyd
2...Revolver....The Beatles
1...Led Zeppelin IV....Led Zeppelin

On August 8th I will be sure to post the 8 albums chosen, I wonder how close my guesses will be.  ;D

Yeah, I was thinking Sgt. Peppers but when it comes down to it, is Sgt. Peppers really people's
favorite Beatles album? For me it's a toss up between Revolver and Rubber Soul. Can't leave out
The White album either.

As far as Beatles albums go-it is a toss up between Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road & the White Album.

Breakfast in America - Supertramp

One of my favorite 70s albums.  I have listened to it over and over again.  I can't make up my mind, one of the following:

Roxy Music - Country Life
Steely Dan - Katy Lied
Breakfast In America - Supertramp
Close To The Edge - Yes
Quadrephenia - The Who
Pink Floyd - The Wall
Led Zeppelin - Led Zeppelin III
Fleetwood Mac - Rumours

It is 8-8-08, the 8 greatest classic rock albums, as chosen by the listeners have been played.
Here are the 8 albums chosen.

8...Boston....Boston ( Why? A generic band that plays campy, made for radio, rock songs. Boston is
nothing more than a glorified garage band that is best suited for a prom.)

7...Fleetwood Mac....Rumours ( I'm not surprised by this selection, after all it was a descent album)

6...Eagles....Hotel California (Not been a big fan of the Eagles, I wasn't familiar with all the songs on the album. After
hearing it I thought,"Man, this really sucks! God, I wanted to hang myself.)

5...Led Zeppelin....Led Zeppelin IV ( I figured this would be on the list, I thought it would rank higher though.)

4...Beatles....Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band ( Again, I thought which ever Beatles album chosen would be ranked higher.)

3...Bruce Springsteen....Born To Run ( I can live with it though I would have picked Darkness On The Edge Of Town.)

2...The Who....Who's Next ( This one threw me of guard. Great album but I don't think it's 2nd best.)

1...Pink Floyd....Dark Side Of The Moon ( Absolutely no surprises with this choice. It wouldn't be my choice but I
figured it to be chosen in this slot.)

So there you have it, the top 8 albums chosen by WMGK in Philadelphia's listeners. This list tells me that the majority of
classic rock fans in Philadelphia have no imagination. Let's hear the same tired songs we hear every day.

Sorry,  GG Allin isn't "classic rock" in most circles.  To bad, eh?

Oh, I disagree...You're judging this apparently from only your perspective of it today, not when it came out.   That album was huge!  There was nothing like it when it hit the radiowaves.  Sure, if you're going to judge it today, as an old fart, then sure, it may sound contrived.  But if you were 10 or 15 or 18 when it came out, then you know it has a place in rock history, perhaps not rock present.

7...Fleetwood Mac....Rumours ( I'm not surprised by this selection, after all it was a descent album)

Way over-rated.  They played that thing to-death, nearly Freebird-to-death  aka I don't ever want to hear it again...

6...Eagles....Hotel California (Not been a big fan of the Eagles, I wasn't familiar with all the songs on the album. After
hearing it I thought,"Man, this really sucks! God, I wanted to hang myself.)

Why didn't you?

5...Led Zeppelin....Led Zeppelin IV ( I figured this would be on the list, I thought it would rank higher though.)

I think IV is over-rated.  I'd go for III or Physical Graffitti first.

4...Beatles....Sgt. Peppers Lonely Hearts Club Band ( Again, I thought which ever Beatles album chosen would be ranked higher.)

Beatles = overrated.  They deserve their place in history as THE first rock band, and they did have dozens of hits.  However, not all of their stuff is great, in fact, some of it really sucks, especially the crap with Lennon singing.  It's such a whiny album!  Perhaps it was better when everyone was stoned listening to it...

3...Bruce Springsteen....Born To Run ( I can live with it though I would have picked Darkness On The Edge Of Town.)

Hated it in high school; love it now.

2...The Who....Who's Next ( This one threw me of guard. Great album but I don't think it's 2nd best.)

Good pick, but Porno-Pete has tarnished the name forever, AND they charge $200 for concert tix...

1...Pink Floyd....Dark Side Of The Moon ( Absolutely no surprises with this choice. It wouldn't be my choice but I
figured it to be chosen in this slot.)

Another drug-infested band.  It's just too slow and depressing, although it was recorded really well, technically speaking.

It's a conundrum:  same old tired songs, or new CRAPPY songs.  Rock is for the most part, dead (as the Who put it).
