I liked what I heard...back in the mid 70's. I can only remember one hit in Australia....Hard Times In Old England (listening to it right now).  They have a very old English/Irish folk music/dance a jig sound.... really unique at that time...... :)

People may mix up their name with Steely Dan... :o

I'm not a huge fan, but they made some pretty fine stuff...

'Gaudete' holds two distinctions...the first British Top 20 hit to be sung a capella and entirely in Latin!

Now you are talking my type of music.  Steeleye Span along with Fairport Convention and Lidisfarne are 3 of the greatest groups to come out of Englands folk Rock scene of the late 60's. Maddy Prior is an amazing voice that ranks up there with Sandy denny and Annie Haslam.  And to Quote Annie Haslam..."Steeleye Span is like a bus, it goes along and people get on and people get off of it. Sometimes the bus goes along the route you want to go, and sometimes it turns off, so you get off".

Wasn't a big fan of them, used to have a boyfriend that was about 12 years older then me and he wanted me to track down a cd of theirs, and I, being a librarian who likes solving mysteries, did so.  Not really my cup of tea though.

I must admit that I'm a bit hot and cold about Steeleye Span, Fairport was the better band in my opinion.
I particularly like their versions of Black Jack Davy, The Lark In The Morning, Cam Ye O'er Frae France, All
Around My Hat and Gaudete (an original choice of single, even in the 70s).
