Remember, at the beginning of the 70's, nobody stood up and said 'it's a new decade, we have to change the sound!!!'  The songs we heard in the beginning of the 70's came from musicians who had been working on those same songs at the end of the 60's.  On the other hand, anything that sounds extremely 60's in the 70's probably means that the artist was doing something comfortable/familiar rather than intentionally bracing the latest trends.  This is of course a generality.  It's feasible there were 70's artists who "tried" to emulate a 60's sound to make it nostagic, but that's not as likely, because at the beginning of the 70's the 60's wasn't considered nostalgic yet, just old.

That being said, there are a ton of early 70's songs that sound like they belong in the 60's.  This wasn't usually done by anyone's intentional effort, though.

This may become a BIG list, as the '70s didn't really establish their own identity until around mid-1974 when disco songs started to top charts. You certainly had a lot of guitar songs in the early '70s that were an echo of the folk-rock era. But what really separated to '60s from the '70s were the increasing use of synthesizers (albeit analog) to the foreground, and multitracking becoming more prominent. The '60s had a "rawness" that much of the '70s lacked (though still very raw compared to the '80s). 1970-71 was a "calmer late '60s" with psychedelic music still around but declining. But still I have found a few songs that could sound like they could be from the pre-psychedelic '60s.

-Just My Imagination- The Temptations (1971)- Recalls the "My Girl" era to a degree.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YNn361umypM

-The Fortunes' Here Comes That Rainy Day Feeling Again (1971) sounds like a Motown song from around 1965, plus there's even some light "doo wopping".

-Sammy Davis Jr.- The Candy Man (1972)- recorded version sounds like it could be from 1963/64!

-The Main Ingredient- Everybody Plays The Fool (1972)- Has that Austin Powers, '60s Marvin Gaye vibe to it.

I was just gonna say that one, sounds very late 60's.
and for me, also a very "James Bond" like song.

Claire (Gilbert O'Sullivan) always reminds me of Penny lane...don't know why.

Got to Get a Message to You--Bee Gees

Er...that is from the 60s...1968, to be precise!

Two 70s songs that were 'intended' to sound from the decade before...

'Go All The Way' by The Raspberries (so much so, that the mix was near-mono!)
'Beach Baby' - First Class

Tears of a clown (Smokey Robinson)

Again, that IS from the '60s- first released in 1967 on their Make It Happen album. It has that '60s rawness that Diana Ross' Ain't No Mountain High Enough and The Jackson 5's I'll Be There, hits around the same time, lack.
