Subject: Favorite theme song from 1970's shows

Written By: Frank on 03/01/09 at 1:38 pm

What's your favorite theme song from the 70's. There's quite a few good ones, isn't there.

My favorite one is the theme to "Love American Style",  :)with "One day at a time" a close second  ???
What's your favorite one?

(Cartoon themes can also be included)

There are many...but the first thing that jumped into my mind was The Rockford Files theme....

I still remember the themes from Lost in Space, Time Tunnel and Land of the Giants (sounded like they were done by the same composer). I think they were all still showing in the 70's....

Gotta be the 'Theme From S.W.A.T.'

And though not a 70s show per se, it aired all through the 70s, was the theme to Canadian kids show 'The Friendly Giant'.  I used to be able to play that on a recorder, but it's been so long, I dunno if I still can

And there is a very good reason for that, aside from the fact they were all Irwin Allen projects, John Williams was the composer. That boy wrote some of the most recognizable scores of all time- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Williams

Taxi and Barney Miller are two of the greatest theme songs ever!

Not surprising!  :)  I remember that Lost In Space had two themes. I liked the original theme the best. The revamped theme was very similar to Land of the Giants.

The second theme was meant to usher in the newer, hipper, more psychedelic look of the series as they transitioned from B&W to hot pastels and trippy  show themes. Not sure which version I prefer.

Has to be a tie between Quincy Jones's Sanford & Son theme, and Jose Fellicano's Chico and The Man.

Two of the most soulful tunes ever set to sitcom, IMO.

Sanford & Son had to be the best of all of them.  Also 3's Company / Happy Days / The Odd Couple & The Love Boat

A few of my all time favorites would have to be the theme song from Cheers "Where Everybody Knows Your Name", and Hill Street Blues - even though it was primarily an instrumental

S.W.A.T. was a good one.  It even went to the Top 40.  There were a whole bunch of action show themes with a funky beat and a synth riff.

"Charlie's Angels" I recall sounding a bit like "The Hustle."

"Sanford & Son" is still my favorite.  Quincy Jones.  The title is actually "The Streetbeater."

I don't remember that show. Maybe it wasn't picked up in Oz!  Good theme.......and the show had 'name' actors (but they probably weren't THAT well known back then).  :-\\ I can't quite place the singer though.....I KNOW I've heard that voice before!

Wait....after listening a few times more....it sounds like the same voice that sang There's Got To Be a Morning After (Poseidon Adventure) & We May Never Love Like This Again (Towering Inferno)........and that would make it Maureen McGovern!

It's funny, I remember the opening from Angie, now that I've seen it... but for the life of me, I can't remember anything about the show. It must have been one of those I changed the channel on.

Yup-that who it be. The song was on the charts here for a bit in 1979 (hit 18).
