Hey--while I'm not gay, I find this period interesting:

Like any other thing, facial hair has it's trends. In the 60s, beards were popular; in the 80s, it was designer stubble ala Don Johnson. Currently, the most popular facial hair trend for a man is three fold: Either a chin strap (usually for younger people and hip hop fans), a goatee, and 5 o'clock shadow. However, in the 70s, the two most popular forms of facial hair a man could have were either a mustache, sideburns, or both. To have a mustache in the '70s was to be manly: masculine action heroes and movie stars such as Burt Reynolds, Al Pacino, and Tom Selleck wore them at one point or another; previously, debonair men such as Douglas Fairbanks and Clark Gable wore thin, clipped mustaches. Many '70s porn stars, such as Ron Jeremy and others also wore mustaches.

Toward the late '70s, many gay men decided to dress like blue collar straight men and thus the ''clone'' look came into the fore. A clone typically wore a tight fitting t-shirt or tank top, jeans, short hair and a mustache. A celebrity known for the clone look was Freddie Mercury, who from 1979 to 1988 dressed like an archetypical clone.

It's not necesarily a gay thing, after all, there are women who have beards and sideburns :D

Some women liked them. My mother, for example. Saw a picture of her with her first husband which was taken around 1972 or 1973 and he had thick, Elvis-esque sideburns which went down to his chin and my dad made a remark and she replied she thought they looked good on guys and it was she who asked him to grow them.

True, and it had nothing to do with being gay.  It was high fashion to have the "right" facial hair (as at any other time).  Both mustaches and sideburns were "in" then and generally contributed to what was considered attractive at that time.

I switched high schools as a soph in '74 and recall developing an instantaneous crush on a tall senior who had thick wavy hair, bright eyes, a cheery smile, and - gasp - lush thick sideburns!  Ooo-la-la!  :D  ;D

Yeah, I didn't mean that it had anything to do with being gay--sideburns and staches were ''in'' in the 70s. However, due to the whole clone look which appeared toward the end of the decade, staches came to be unfortunately associated with gays.
