Subject: The Disco Thread

Written By: whistledog on 05/03/09 at 7:27 pm

There are many threads already about Disco.  I didn't know which one to bump, so why not start a fresh perspective on the topic.

Disco was popular in both the mainstream and the clubs.  So much that Billboard magazine created it's own chart to measure what was being played in the clubs.  This was known as the 'Billboard Disco Action Chart'.  When disco died, it evolved into what is still known as the 'Hot Dance Music/Club Play' chart.  In Canada, we had the RPM Disco Playlist

As disco was at the height of it's popularity during the late 70s, here's a look into what we Canucks were listening to.  The Top 15 songs of Canada's RPM Disco Playlist, charted dated April 21, 1979

01 | Knock on Wood - Amii Stewart
02 | He's the Greatest Dancer - Sister Sledge
03 | Disco Nights (Rock Freak) - G.Q.
04 | Star Love - Cheryl Lynn
05 | In the Navy - The Village People
06 | Dancer - Gino Soccio
07 | Tragedy - The Bee Gees
08 | Got My Mind Made Up - Instant Funk
09 | Keep on Dancin' - Gary's Gang
10 | Shake Your Body - The Jacksons
11 | I Want You Love - Chic
12 | Heart of Glass - Blondie
13 | I Will Survive - Gloria Gaynor
14 | Bang A Gong (Get it On) - Witch Queen
15 | (I Only Want to) Get Up and Dance - The Raes

Arguably the biggest Disco remixer/producer to come from Canada is Montreal born Gino Soccio.  In 1977 under the alias Kebekelektrik, he hit the Top 20 on Billboard's 'Disco Action' chart with the song 'Magic Fly'.  The following year, he assembled and produced the studio group Witch Queen and hit the Top 10 on the Billboard Disco Action chart in 1979 with a cover of T-Rex's 'Bang A Gong (Get it On)'.  Both songs were also minor hits in the Canadian Top 100, the latter (Bang A Gong) also charting in the US Hot 100

Also in 1979, under his own name, he had his only US Hot 100 entry with 'Dancer' which reached US #48 and #1 on the Disco Action chart.  It was also his only UK Chart entry, peaking at UK #46.  He would go on to several other dance hits in the US, most notably 'Try it Out' in 1981 which topped the US Dance chart

For me, the best Disco song was the 1978 smash 'Let's All Chant' by Michael Zager Band, followed closely by the 1979 Canadian favourite 'We All Need Love' by Domenic Troiano

My favourite Disco album is K-Tel's 'Disco Fire' from 1978.  I own the Canadian version on both LP and Cassette Tape and this is an actual scan of my cassette copy ...

I really hated disco when I was a teen, I mean with a passion. I've learned to tolerate it now and find
that I really like some of it but you didn't hear me say that.  ;D

Two songs I did like as a teen were:

If I Can't Have You....Yvonne Elliman.

The Fifth Of Beethoven....Walter Murphy.

^ No shame in that.  Rod Stewart was once quoted as saying he hated disco.  So what did he do?  He wrote and recorded 'Da Ya Think I'm Sexy' and it became the biggest hit of his career LOL

The Rolling Stones also sold out with 'Miss You' in 1978 and Kiss did 'I Was Made For Lovin' You' in 1979.  Disco was the craze, and even the rockers were getting into it lol

I don't think the Rolling Stones were ever the same after that debacle. Rod Stewart and Kiss could get away with
a little disco, they actually made it work. The Stones however were horrible at it and didn't fit the disco image but I
have to hand it to Mick for trying to cash in on a craze.

I love disco!  :)

In the 90s there was this AC radio station that used to devote Saturday nights to nothing but 70s disco.  I spent many dateless and lonely Saturday nights listening to that program!  ;D

Just some of my favorites -

GQ - Disco Nights
Chic - "Dance Dance Dance (Yowsah Yowsah Yowsah)" and "Good Times"
Thelma Houston - Don't Leave Me This Way
Andrea True Connection - More More More
Peaches and Herb - Shake Your Groove Thing
The Sylvers - Boogie Fever

...and so many more.

I'm going to check out the ones Whistledog listed that I'm not familiar with sometime (like Gino Soccio).  :)

In the big scheme, Disco is not my all-time favorite genre, but I liked a substantial amount of it and I did lots of dancing at that time (first years at university - I became a 'party animal').

That said, I gravitated towards Disco tunes that were Funky.  For instance, just last week I was combing through my old vinyl and ran across the self titled vinyl album by Brick.  Listening to it really took me back.  The best known songs on the album were Dusic and Ain't Gonna Hurt Nobody, but there's other tunes on that LP that I loved dancing to.

A few other Disco artists I consistently liked:

Chic
Heatwave
L.T.D.
Parliament/Funkadelic
Michael Jackson/Jacksons
Sister Sledge
Ohio Players

Anyone whose career was 'sagging' a little could be persuaded to have a go...

In some cases, rather unwisely...Pet Clark's 1976 disco rehash of 'Downtown' is best avoided!  :P

I know I usually haunt the 80s thread, but I have a special place in my heart for disco music and pretty much love everything. As long as I can shake my booty to it, I love it! LOL

Just give me some bellbottoms, a pair of plats with some gold fish in them and I'm good to go!

Good Grief! lol  Did Petula plan on releasing a newly recorded disco version of it, or was it simply a case of a DJ adding a beat to her original and making it a disco track?

I don't think a disco version of that would have sounded good

The 1976 version was newly-recorded, but there was a 'remix' version released in 1988 which tacked a up-to-date beat upon the original...this latter version became her last British Top 10 hit! Saints preserve us!  :o

Because I can, here's a bunch of Canadian disco hits, complete with the debut solo single by Bryan Adams.  Apparently Mr. Adams is so ashamed of that song, he's vowed never to perform it again ...

Wow - André Gagnon
From New York to LA - Patsy Gallant
It Always Happens This Way - Toulouse
Magic Fly - Kebekelektrik
A Little Lovin' (Keeps the Doctor Away) - The Raes
(Boogie Woogie) Dancin' Shoes - Claudja Barry
I Only Want to Get Up and Dance - The Raes
We All Need Love - Troiano
Gimme Your Love - Alma Faye Brooks
Get Up and Boogie - Freddie James
Let Me Take You Dancing - Bryan Adams
Don't Turn Around - The Raes
Midnight Music - Martin Stevens
Hold On, I'm Coming - Karen Silver
Come to Me - France Joli

From New York to LA - Patsy Gallant

An absolute classic...I must say I'm quite surprised it only reached #6 in her homeland!  :o

It was her only flirtation in the UK chart, but better to be associated with one good song than with none at all!

It was actually quite an achievement that she was able to make it to #6.  Even with CANCON rules in effect, alot of DJs at the time still prefered to play what the Americans were listening to (as that's what we got (and still do get) most of our media from)

Oddly enough, 'From New York to LA' failed to reach the US Hot 100, so I was pleasantly surprised to see it in the UK Top 40.  If I remember correctly, she was the only Canadian artist of the 70s disco era to reach the UK Top 40.  The next cloest I do believe would have been Gino Soccio with 'Dancer' in 1979

He sounds like Jimmy Osmond!  :D

He does actually LOL  If you listen close, you can tell his vocals were sped up a bit.  Prior to 'Let Me Take You Dancing', he was the replacement vocalist for the Glam Rock band Sweeney Todd, so I gather producers wanted to bring him out of that medium

Here are several '70s "Disco" songs that I like which I don't think have been listed already...

Night Fever + More Than a Woman - Bee Gees (1977) (I'm sure these 2 were already given)
Rock the Boat - Hues Corporation (1974)

Lovin' Is Really My Game - Brainstorm (1977)

Who Loves You - Four Seasons (1975)

I remember listening to this 45 on my sister's cheap phonograph at the time.  Youtube makes it a little confusing because whoever posted the video made a Kristy McNichol montage for it.

Anyway,  I used think the lyrics were "Hey, Mr. Nixon with a smile on her face..."

Ain’t no stopping it now: the return of disco.

Not so surprising either, something about disco, often called mindless, uncaring dancing music that seems to be almost like comfort food in a time of dire economic famine, it soothes the soul.

Its not too surprising that disco clubs are shooting up all over again. Even here in southern Cali and LA, disco clubs, even roller-disco nights and themed clubs are making a strong resurgence.

It never went away for me, I was always there for Wednesday disco nights and now that some places are disco all week long I'll be there too...like Disco Stu, just waiting to dance wit you and a place to do it. ;)
