Subject: Zoom!

Written By: Frank on 06/16/09 at 1:04 am

Anyone remember this 1970's children's TV show called Zoom?
I think it was based in Boston, on PBS.

I used to watch this show, and it was fun to watch.

Any memories from this show?

Hell yes!
One of my fav's next to the Electric Company on PBS. :)

We're gonna Zoom, ZOom, Zooma, Zoom!

And the famous address to send letters:

Send it to ZOOM! At
WBGH
Bah-ston, Mass
Ohhh, Two, One, Three-FoUr!
Send it to Zoom!
(really scary that I remember that completely by heart, even now! ::) )

Learned great songs and skits here, really a great kids, learning and entertainment show.

I learned "On Top of Old Spaghetti" from Zoom!

Loved the show, but unlike a lot of other nostalgic PBS shows, can't seem to find too much of it on DVD or other format to re-live the fun times...if anyone knows where to get any of the original 70's episodes on DVD, please let me know!

Ditto that for those that remember "Mulligans Stew" :D

Programme was probably never shown in Britain, but we did get 'The Electric Company' for a while...

If memory serves, it used to be shunted in with the BBC Schools programmes, which gave things a bit of contrast!

I have seen Zoom on DVD, basically it's a short recap for the first 5 or so seasons, and there's only a couple of complete episodes. See the link below.

I SO wanted to be on that show when I was a kid.  Of course, living in Ohio and being a fat kid didn't help my chances of getting on there.

Loved that show.  My hubby and I were just talking about it the other day.  He remembers more then I do.

My brother-in-law tried out to be a Zoom kid, but during the dancing portion of the audition, he tripped on some electrical cords and fell on his ass.  At least that's the way he tells it.  May be he was just an ugly kid and they didn't want to tell him so!

I think if you hear things like that on such a regular basis they just become stuck in your head.

I can recall the address of two different tv shows and the phone number for another

i think it's because they sang the address. if the song stuck in your head, so did the address.

Ah! Yes! Home to a great many Thames TV programme...

Apparently, that studio used to belong to Warner Brothers before a German bomb hit it in WW2...

And most of the old ATV studios have now been demolished (though not through enemy action)...shame!

Benny Hill did his Thames TV programmes from there.

Sadly Benny Hill had an apartment close by and was found dead there.

Yes, I remember Zoom.
Yes, I remember the address.
Yes, I remember & can STILL do that Bernadette butterfly thing with her arms.
Yes, I remember the Ubadubby language.
Yes, I remember Fanny Dooley.

Say you wake up in the middle of the night.
You got an idea that's out of sight.
You jump out of bed look around your room.
You write it all down and send it to Zoom.

Oooooh yeah!  Things in the seventies were just OUTTA SIGHT!

See, if you grew up in the Boston area, you noticed the address was right in Boston, so a lot of kids got the idea they could be on the show with the benefit of proximity.  I entertained the idea for a few days, then I told my sister, and she laughed at me 'till I cried!

You get to a crucial age when you say of "Zoom," Oh My God!  This is the boringest, gayest show ever!"  So then you parents graduate you to watching "Masterpiece Theater" with them.  Jokes on you, "Masterpiece T" is the greatest cure for tweenie insomnia!

You're right, now that I run it back in my rusty memory, it was missing something.

Still its amazing how much this show had enough of a mark to still be remembered now. Its not like we're talking about Sesame Street. I don't think Zoom has as much exposure or had nearly the same amount of audience. When I watched Zoom, there was something about it that made it feel like it was just for you and it was just you and the Zoom players. Personal, connected and fun.

Something PBS and CTW and TV in general will never be able to reproduce again...sigh... :(

There is an online sight that updates you on who the original members were and what they are doing today.

Also the show "the DOUBLEDECKERS' have a cast update site as well!

Sadly, his son has acheived some notoriety of his own...serving life for a gangland execution... :(

Although it came later, and was from Canada, the only show I think that came close would have been You Can't Do That On Television.  While not as educational, it had that "kid made" feeling.
