Subject: 70s Music - The YOUTUBE Thread
Written By: whistledog on 06/30/09 at 7:55 pm
Post a YOUTUBE link of a 70s song. You may end up finding a song you like, one you never knew about, one you just love hearing again and/or ones that others can enjoy too.
Allow me to kick off this thread with a well loved classic from 1975 ...
America - Sister Golden Hair
Love Blues music? Then how about this 1973 cover of Big Joe Turner's classic 'Flip, Flop and Fly'. Failed to ignite the US chart, but was a Top 40 favourite in Canada
Downchild Blues Band - Flip, Flop and Fly
Let's keep this thread a rollin'. Crank out those 70s favourites ...

No, no...give 'em a chance! They could be pretty versatile and a million miles from Coke adverts and dodgy Eurovision numbers when they wanted to be...
Excellent rendition of the 'Tommy' staple...
And this little beauty sadly became their last British hit...
(It was originally by Australian band The Procession and it originally had a much darker second verse...)

Some songs that were only minor hits in Holland:
From Here To Eternity - Giorgio Moroder
Double Dutch - Fatback Band
We're All Alone - Walker Brothers
And here's one from an artist who doesn't seem to have a lot of fans around here:
If You Know What I Mean - Neil Diamond
Of course I could've picked any other song too, because he had plenty of hits.

Totally unfamiliar with that tune. Van Der Valk was a British tv series, and though set in Amsterdam I don't think it was ever broadcasted in Holland.

Strange on both counts...allegedly, some of the song was based upon a Dutch nursey rhyme (don't ask me what!), which is where I assumed you may have knew it from...oh well!
The composer was a guy called Jack Trombey, which was a nom de plume of Jan Stoeckhart...

Officially, it's Stoeckart (without the h). I'm not very familiar with his works, I must admit.
The tune does sound like it could be based on a Dutch nursery rhyme, though I can't tell which one. :-\\

Classic Canada: Pagliaro - Lovin' You Ain't Easy (1972)
A UK one hit wonder in 1972 where it crept into the Top 40. He had many other hits in Canada, such as 'What the Hell I Got', which some say was his best, but I like the former better. What do you think?

Glad you liked it. Triumvirat is a progressive rock band from Germany that sound a bit like ELP. That is not an
accident, Jurgen Fritz, keyboardist for Triumvirat, often cited Keith Emerson as his major influence in music.

Only A Fool - Mighty Sparrow & Byron Lee with The Dragonaires
Technically a 1960's song (1969), but it wasn't until 1978 before it became a big hit in Holland.
Why Holland? And why only Holland? I've no answers to those questions.
Laugh And Walk Away - The Shirts
Tell Me Your Plans - The Shirts
The Shirts were an American band with limited success in their home country. They were hugely popular (in 1978/1979) in Holland and Belgium.
We Belong To The Night - Ellen Foley
What's A Matter Baby - Ellen Foley
I could've sworn there was a video to this song on YouTube, but it seems to have been deleted. This audio version has quite a heavy bass.
Ellen Foley is mostly known for her vocals on Meat Loaf's 'Bat Out Of Hell' album, but she also had a solo career.
These two songs both made Top 10 in Holland. The first one even went all the way to #1.

Here's one that not many people realize is a 70s song ...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nsbrw9Y6_ng
Before 1980, Japan had no hits in their British homeland. Releasd in 1979, 'Life in Tokyo' was their 6th single and became a surprise hit in Canada where it reached #72. A remix of the song would later enter the UK Top 30 in 1982

Remember Rubicon? They were a OHW in 1978 with the ballad 'I'm Gonna Take Care of Everything'. It fell just outside of the Canadian Top 40, but it went into the US Top 30.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv6gX5w7X4I
Rubicon was also known for being a spin-off and creating a spin-off: The group was formed by Jerry Martini (a founding member of Sly and the Family Stone) and when they called it quits, members Brad Gillis and Jack Blades went on to form Night Ranger

Here's a classic from 1974 by The Rubettes.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uEWc6u-y5rw
'Sugar Baby Love' was their only chart single in North America, but I know 'Tonight' was a radio favourite up here: It appears on a 1974 Canadian released K-Tel hits compilation called 'Sounds Spectacular' which I proudly have in my record collection.
'Tonight' reached #12 in the UK

One more for the road, as well, one I mentioned (jokingly) in another thread.
Pink Lady were a duo from Japan, and hold the distinction of being one of only two Japanese artists (the other being Kyu Sakamoto) to hit the US Top 40, when their single 'Kiss in the Dark' reached #37 in 1979
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecMA0spmyoE
They made their American TV debut on a Leif Garrett TV special (which is the clip) and the popularity of this single became so grand, that the braniacs at NBC TV decided to give the duo their own variety show, which also featured comedian Jeff Altman. It ran for 5 episodes in 1980 before being cancelled.
If you like catchy disco music, it's quite a good song

The year was 1971. I'm too young to remember it when it was on the charts, but I remember it well from lying awake at night listening to pop stations in the late seventies. I thought the whispering was peculiar, as with the whispering in 10cc's "I'm Not In Love." Both songs were frequent on late night mellow programming.

Cliff Edwards, the co-lead singer for The Bells lives in my area, and a few years ago, reformed The Bells for a one concert showing at a local church here. I still kick myself for not going. The church they played at is like a 5 minute walk from my house lol
'Stay Awhile' was written by a Newfoundlander named Ken Tobias, who went on to have a few hits here in Canada, the best remembered of which was 'Every Bit of Love' from 1975.

Wikipedia records Tobias as being from Saint John, NB, but I wouldn't put it past Wikipedia writers to mix up Saint John and St. John's.

Saint John is actually correct. I get my Maritime provinces all mixed up.
Frank 'Music Box Dancer' Mills was once a member of the Bells, and appears on 'Stay Awhile'. When he left (shortly after that song became a smash hit), he ended up with a better career in the US as a solo artist than the Bells ever did.

In common with a few follow-ups to big hits, 'Tonight' was written to sound almost, but not exactly the same as, 'Sugar Baby Love'...
However, the lead vocalists on both songs were different...'Tonight' was Alan Williiams, while 'Sugar Baby Love' was Paul Da Vinci...

Even the sheet music sold 3 million copies!
It's time for Midnight Express!

Art Bell used "Chase" as bumper music for his paranormal-themed syndicated radio show "Coast to Coast AM." I don't know if he still does. New "Coast to Coast" broadcasts are few and far between and Art Bell is always mixed up in some scandal.

In some ways, even the singer sounds the same. I didn't know for the longest time that it was a different singer on each

Oh do I remember that song. Fantastic stuff! :)
Walter "Zwol" Zwolinski was the lead singer for a band called Brutus, who had a few hits here in their native Canada, most notably with 'Ooh Mama Mama' in 1976, a song that I still here on classic rock stations
