Subject: Battle of the '70s divas (Donna, Chaka, Natalie, Gloria, and more)

Written By: yelimsexa on 08/26/09 at 7:53 am

A lot of these have true talent, but I'm going to give my nod to Donna Summer. She really founded modern dance music and made distinctive vocals along with slick production a new standard for others to follow, and she is still going strong today.

I'm going for 'Other' and that would be for Barbra Streisand ...who was still going very strongly in the 70's. The Way We Were and Evergreen were monster hits (both no 1's)...and she had a #1  with Donna Summer as well with Enough Is Enough (No More Tears). Another #1 was with Neil Diamond (YOu Don't Bring Me Flowers.

Streisand was the best female vocalist of the 60's and 70's and would be in the top 5 ever IMO...(and I'm not even a great fan of hers).

Out of the names in your list ...I rate Roberta Flack as the most talented.

Of others missing...I think Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Carly Simon were great singer songwriters of the 70's (but granted...were not very diva-ish)

Based on the amount of music I purchased for each of them, I decided to go with Chaka Khan  :)

Linda Ronstadt, Olivia newton John, or Helen Reddy would have got my vote.

Now, how on earth could I have forgotten ONJ (I was in love with her since the 60's)...and Helen Reddy was great too. Come to mention Linda looked great in hot pants with roller skates on.... ::)

Helen Reddy was fantastic and probably in that decade the most successful.  In fact, until Grease I think she sold more than ONJ

I reckon ONJ has sold more (over time). I'm pretty sure Helen reddy had only 3 number 1 hits (not sure though). I think ONJ had at least 4 or 5 number 1's.  ....and I'm guessing she would have sold more records too as she probably made more records than Helen. I actually haven't heard of Helen Reddy in many years...

Apparently, she is retired from show business and is a hypnotherapist!  :o

From the ones in the list, I'd go with the great Donna Summer :)

I chose other for the great Canadian voice of:  Charity Brown

Her versions of the Motown classics You Beat Me to the Punch and Take Me in Your Arms were just superb!
