Subject: 35 Years Ago Thread

Written By: AmericanGirl on 12/31/09 at 7:14 pm

Since the older 35 Years ago thread is buried in the archives, it's time to start a new one.

I remember what I was doing on December 31, 1974.  A fourteen year old, I had looked forward all day for the Big 89 countdown on Chicago's music radio WLS (890 AM).  I liked hearing a rewind of all the best tunes from 1974 as a countdown (this was the third countdown that I stayed up for).  I remember particularly looking forward to the '74 rewind, because there were so many favorite songs for me to look forward to.  I recall watching some retrospective news stories earlier in the day, but don't remember much about them.

Anyone else?

I was about four years ahead of you, AmericanGirl. I was out of high school, living in a large drafty house. I had a cheap stereo and my two albums were Elton John's "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road", and the Who's "Quadrophenia". They played constantly, to the enjoyment or chagrin of my three roommates. Spent that new years with my then girlfriend...very enjoyable. More so maybe in retrospect.

35 years ago I was 5 y/o and living in southern Oregon with my aunt and uncle.  They ran a dairy farm.  Mom sent me there after the divorce...

Got a Beatles record for Christmas...

  That's about all I remember...

I was 11+. I remember Goodbye Yellow brick road was such an amazing double-album that year, great songs.
New Years eve my parents had a party (as they usually did). I had a 3 friends sleepover that night, (all girls) and when chatted till 4am.

I guess when I wasn't rolling around in the snow in my snowsuit, I was playing with my new Matchbox cars and listening to my dad bitching incessantly about guys named Nixon and Kennedy.

Squeaky!

My dad weaved it into his rhetoric as emblematic of what a goof Gerald Ford was:

"Two broads tried to shoot him, one the gun jammed, and the other missed!"

If you don't find that funny then I guess your not as seething, cynical, and misogynistic as my dad, which might make you a remotely pleasant person.

Lynette "Squeaky" Fromme is in the Manson Family.  I say is, not was, because she's still faithful to Charlie.  Manson didn't have anything to do with the incident.  Fromme was screaming something about the plight of the Redwood treas but the gun misfired.  She's still in the poky.  She's escaped from prison a couple of times and I'd still consider her dangerous even if she is 62 now!  Fromme was not present at the murders in 1969, but she was walking around crazy as a loon for five years with Charlie Manson tapes playing in her head.  She was a ticking time bomb!
:o

The other one was Sara Jane Moore, who was obsessed with the Patty Hearst kidnapping and just kind of whacko, shot at Ford and missed.  This in the fall of 1975, just a few weeks after Fromme's attempt.  Moore served her life sentence and was let out for good behavior in 2007 at the age of 77.  IMO, if you try to assassinate the President, you should never get out as long as there's a breath in your body.  I don't care if you discover the cure for cancer in the prison library!

I guess the key factor there was that she's 77 and in their view probably did no longer pose a threat. Wonder if they'll let out Mark Chapman at that age. It's been almost 30 years since Lennon's death and I think Chapman was just denied recently.

Summer 1976 - an awesome summer for me!  Between my Junior and Senior year of H.S., I was enrolled in a pre-college program at an area college, a program to help potential students learn about engineering.  It was a bit like school, a bit like work, and more fun than either.  We did competitive projects, we sat in lectures (usually good, not boring), we took field trips, we even had a couple social occasions. That program solidified my career interest!  Not to mention that I made some friends there and had a good time.

There was some good music out that summer.  Stuff like Boz Scaggs' Lowdown, Bee Gees' You Should Be Dancing, Cliff Richards' Devil Woman, Jefferson Starship's With Your Love, and Heart's Magic Man, just to name a few.

Ah, sweet sixteen - a good time to be me!  :)
