One of the scariest movies ever made.

My dad's friend Dick Smith did the make-up for the movie.

It's amazing how effective the make-up was/is.  No hi-tech stuff, no computer animaton.  Not just the horror stuff but also the way he was able to age Max Von Sydow, using a technique that was created and perfected by Dick Smith.  Linda did all of the scenes except for a couple, one with the cross and the vomit scene (which was pea soup). And the only time a human wasn't playing the part was when her head spins.

I hope no one in Hollywood is stupid enough to try and do a re-make.

The best horror movie ever!

With all the special effects done/performed in front of the camera.

I was too scared of it.  I didn't watch it until I was a teenager, I found it plenty scary then too!

Scary yes, and saw it while still underage for the certification.

Satan got into the girl's body starting as "Captain Howdy."  Something cute and banal.  That's the way the devil gets to you.  He starts as just what you need just when you need it, and moves in and destroys your soul.

Barney the corporate Frankenstein was a failure for Satan.  Kids with preferences for any sort of anything preferred one thing or another to Barney.  The kids who liked Barney were so stoned on Adderol they had a vacant, glassy stare and a penchant for trance.

It didn't work.

Satan returned with Wii.

An interesting read.
Someone did some research into the "facts" in the story of the exorcism the movie was supposedly based on:

I watched the entire movie on Youtube. It creeped me out a little, but it wasn't as terrifying as I expected it to be.

The creepiest part for me is when the devil first enters the child.

"Captain Howdy"
:o

The presentation of the possession is horrifying, but the damage had been done.  The damage was when the devil tricked his way into the young girl's soul.

You too might have a "Captain Howdy" in your life!

I agree, though I may have thought differently had I watched it as a child in the early '80s.

It was a good movie, but I'm a much bigger fan of suspense than gore. This movie mostly relied on the latter.
