It's a lie, I tell you! There was much better stuff out...like Brotherhood Of Man's mighty opus, and the legendary Showaddywaddy...

(Speaking of 1976 (which I suppose we were), the BBC (in its infinite wisdom) has thought fit to re-broadcast 'uncut' editions of the legendary 'Top Of The Pops' from this year on one of its lesser channels...

Why 1976? Well, it turns out that this was when the BBC had got over the habit of 'wiping' videotapes, so theoretically, every episode should exist from then until whenever it went off the air...I suppose it fills up the schedules!)

I absolutely love watching TOTP performances on Youtube.  Great stuff... :)  Who is the dodgy guy with the bad blonde hair? I assume he was a big dj back then?

BTW  Some of those songs listed are in my all time classic list.  Being 16 that year...they bring back all sorts of good memories.  :)

Great old memories in this Aussie list. It highlights how popular ABBA was in Australia at that time....and the fact that some Aussie hits made it onto this list show the influence that COUNTDOWN had on our popular culture as well.  Hits like Howzat, S-S-S-Single Bed, Slipping' Away and Darktown Strutters Ball bring back fond memories.  I remember being surprized when my Mum told me that she liked Darktown Strutters Ball when she was young!  :o ;D

I heard that Abba came close to replacing the Beatles as the biggest artist in Australia for the rock era in '76 or '77.

More than likely you're referring to (Sir) James Saville, who has achieved much in the way of charitable work, but turned out to be a curmudgeonly old sod in reality...

To prove just how our fingers were on the pulse in Britain that year, we had #1 LPs from fresh new acts such as Perry Como, Slim Whitman and Bert Weedon! (Due in no small part to the power of TV-advertising...)

It must have been the heat from that pretty hot summer we had... :P

Most interesting. The French are (or were) obviously very patriotic. I know most of the artists, but hardly any of these songs (apart from the few international hits).

FYI: Sheila (see #22 and 33) scored an international hit a year later with Singing In The Rain. Her radical change of style wasn't exactly applauded by her French fans...

Also very interesting. I see some Dutch artists in the list (at #2/16/31, #8, and #21).

The #4 song in the list is a cover of an original Dutch song ("'t Kleine café aan de haven", by Father Abraham). It wasn't a big hit in Holland at the time, but it soon became one of the most covered songs in Dutch history (try "Red Rose Cafe"). Nowadays it's considered an evergreen.

Some of those songs obviously didn't stand the test of time,
and then there are these two shouldn't have even seen the light of day:

On the Canada's Top-10...
3 - Disco Duck - Rick Dees ??

And this was U.K.'s #1 for '76 ??
1  SAVE YOUR KISSES FOR ME - Brotherhood Of Man

And I'm really surprised that only the Dutch Top-10 had...
6: Peter Frampton - Show Me The Way

A lot of great songs of that year but too many of the "leisure suit" ones made it to the Top-40.

I read a comment in YouTube that "Mississippi", despite reaching number one in many countries, was not released in the United States because of the sexual connotation in the name "Pussycat".  ::) I'm not sure if this is true. I've tried googling it but couldn't find anything.

It was probably released in the U.S. but stayed way down at the bottom of the charts
(I can check Billboard when I have a chance)

I guess it wasn't the kind of "country music" people liked in 1976, nor I in 2011.

As for the name holding them back, that doesn't hold water.
What about that '70s Saturday morning cartoon show, "Josie and the Pussycats" ?
