See the shorts on the "Seventeen" magazine cover?  I had some similar to that - they were my favorites.  Mine were denim-like fabric, color deep purple and hot pink.  I didn't wear them with tights, I just wore them like normal shorts.  One difference from the picture - mine were hip-huggers.  ::)  (I got mine later, probably the late summer or early fall of '72, when I was 12.)

Notice all the hats.  IMO the 70's was a hat-happy decade.

I find it hard to believe the picture having the huge platforms (ala the woman with the obnoxious face on her sweater) was actually 1971 and not later in the decade - platforms weren't very prevalent in 1971, not until about 1973 and later.

Notice in the high school pic that many people are not wearing shoes. I think going to college/university in bare feet was popular from the late '60s to the mid-'70s.

Those shorts would be considered "hotpants" wouldn't they? I wasn't born yet in 1971, but I've read that hotpants came out around '71.
