Subject: Favorite early '70s films

Written By: SuperDude526 on 05/05/11 at 3:10 pm

There's something I love about this era, and I don't have the words for it.  Movies from the immediate post-Woodstock era, meaning from around 1969-1974 are some of my favorite films after good modern era stuff, and after that my guilty pleasure is '80s movies along the lines of Fast Times and the Breakfast Club.  But anyway, I wanted to talk about favorite movies from the '70s.  Mine are Easy Rider, Two-Lane Blacktop, and Friends, the latter being a British-French flick from '71.

What does everyone else like?

Melody, the 1971 British film directed by Waris Hussein about "puppy love". It was released as S.W.A.L.K. in the United Kingdom (S.W.A.L.K. is a message traditionally written on the envelopes of love letters by British schoolchildren, standing for Sealed With A Loving Kiss). The film starred Jack Wild, Mark Lester and Tracy Hyde.

This comedy featured a pre-disco musical soundtrack by the Bee Gees ("In the Morning", "Melody Fair", "Give Your Best", and the hit single "To Love Somebody", "First of May") and the Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young hit "Teach Your Children"

Yeah, I've heard of it by reputation, never actually seen it though.  Friends is somewhat thematically similar, except that the protagonists are in their mid-teens and there's like explicit scenes 'n' stuff.  It really gets me every time though, it just strikes me as so free and pure and all that other corny sheesh.  It's on YouTube for anyone who's interested.

Another interesting tidbit: composing the soundtrack was how Elton John got his big break. ;)

If I call 1974 the early 70's not mid 70's as it is, please include The Exorcist.

Well as I see it, the '70s are divided as follows: '69-'74 is the post-Woodstock era which is summarized in the Easy Rider line "We blew it," '74-'77 is the bicentennial era which continued our downward plunge into national depression (the emotional kind not the economic kind :P), and then from there onward are the disco and revival years when supposedly we got our sheesh together and the nation had "gotten over" Vietnam.

I actually like this movie more than I like Smokey and the Bandit, which is already one of the best movies ever made.

One of my all-time favorite movie lines.  ;)

I've also noticed that Quentin Tarantino uses some of the soundtrack from White Lightning in his later movies (Kill Bill and Inglorious Basterds).

Kelly's Heroes (1970) is a good, funny movie from that era, it's a WWII pic with this kind of weird, late 60's anti-establishment theme to it.

My post is twofold. I'm hoping the AL-B's quoted videos don't post on my quoting of his quote, so I'm kinda sandboxing here. I never knew QT utilized that soundtrack, so I'll have to watch for that next time I view IB (not a fan of the Kill Bill stuff).
Hey, the vids did not take. Great!

Great music too.

Wendy Carlos

You can get the entire filmscore.  You can also get the incidental music from The Shining, which is worth it if you like spooky sounds!

Front 242 sampled the first portion of this clip for their early song "Operating Tracks."  "GVDT" also uses the sample "What's wrong?" from same clip.  Both were released on the 1982 album "Geography," which has been reissued a few times on CD.
